The largest Modern Woodmen gathering in Pike county was held last Saturday in Petersburg with eight local camps sending large delegations. The event began at the public school and parade along Main Street ended at Odd Fellows Hall. Arthur and Union camps led in attendance, with Arthur noted for a strong drill team. P. Kiefer presided and talks by George Hopkins and C. J. Walker highlighted fraternal benefits. Huffman Mine Destroyed By Fire Near Petersburg
About twelve o'clock Tuesday night the Huffman Coal Mine east of Petersburg was found on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, causing about two thousand dollars in damage. The origin is unknown with owners speculating possible incendiary cause. The mine sits on the old Shandy farm, previously operated by Homer Miller.

Interment followed at Walnut Hill beside her husband. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Hawthorn once a prominent county family. She married Elias Osborn in October 1882 and had two children Grace who died in Washington City in 1918 and Hugh who lives in Columbia City. She was a longtime member of the M E church and regular Sunday worshiper until ill health.

James Arnold 80 died Monday at his son Jefferson Arnold’s home from infirmities of advanced age. Born nearby, he married Elizabeth Willis on December 10, 1871, who died five years ago. Six children were born. three survive Lillie Elkins Anna Thomas Jefferson Arnold. Civil War veteran and Primitive Baptist since 1893, he attended services until ill health. Funeral by Rev. Jackson Willis at Arnold Cemetery Tuesday at 11:80. Interment at the family plot.
