The Press wishes readers a Merry Christmas and a peaceful new year. It thanks patrons for their support, hopes for a spirit of peace and goodwill, and invites honest, upright living as the year to come unfolds.
Mrs Leonard Beck fractured a limb after slipping on ice near Pride's Creek Bridge on Pike Avenue. A team was used to return her home and doctors set the broken bone. Friends wish her a speedy recovery. Mrs Emma Chandler returned from Detroit after a six week visit with Mr and Mrs Arthur Chandler. Mrs Laura Brazelton injured hip and leg ligaments after a fall. Dr S R Clark attended and recovery will be slow.
Clark Whitman woke Friday to learn his Somerville coal town store on the Four railroad was robbed. The safe was blown open and $65 in cash taken, with damage to the safe exceeding the amount stolen. nothing else was disturbed.
The recount board led by Judge John F. Dillin and including Republicans Arthur Warren and George Hurst and Democrat W. D. Curl ruled that Thomas J. Ford Democrat beat Chester Beasley Republican by one vote. Each candidate tally stood at 191. Beasley appealed to the Circuit Court but later dropped the challenge. The decision leaves the county with seven of nine trustees as Democrats and ensures a Democratic county Superintendent of Schools.
Orion Peed of Petersburg was appointed a justice of the peace by the Pike County Board of County Commissioners. The longtime former sheriff of Pike County will join Mrs. John Grim as the town’s two justices. The position offers good pay for the time required.
Mrs. Maude Catt and Mrs. Able were shopping in Reaneville on Tuesday, according to local eyewitness notes.
Santa Claus will stop at the high school Saturday afternoon to distribute presents to all poor and needy children. He will attend church Sunday at the Methodist Baptist and Presbyterian churches and visit Sunday school lists. The Delphian Society urges all Petersburg children to be present so none are forgotten and every child receives a Christmas treat.
The Justice of Peace Court of Mrs John Gullick Grim disposed of six cases last week. Mr Hop Mallory faced an affidavit for getting stewed and accepted a fine of two dollars plus costs. Five others pled guilty and paid cash, avoiding trial and potential woman jury. Mrs Irish is becoming familiar with the Squire’s office and may fill the role of Justice of Peace.
The Woman's Club met on Monday December 18 with Mrs Effie Kime presiding After a brief business portion the afternoon program examined Dias Dickens and featured readings on The Christmas Carol Mrs Ueulah Limp highlighted Dickens life and Mrs Elma McKinney presented the tale focusing on its moral lesson
Mrs. Clark Whitman led four surviving members of the Town Hall Association in Petersburg last Friday as they consolidate with the new Library Association to fund a public library. The fund totals $800, with key officers named for the library group. The move aims to launch the library effort after the holidays.
The Petersburg post office set a daily record with 146 outgoing mail sacks while incoming mail remains heavy. War savings certificates drive the rush as the Federal Reserve Bank in St Louis prepares checks by January first. The post office will operate Sunday December 24 with no money orders, and rural and village carriers will run on Christmas day.
James Alton Charities son of Anderson Charles and Miss Eunice Roberts wed at the Clerk's office Wednesday at four o clock. Justice of the Peace Mrs John Gullick Grim officiated, witnessed by J T Newkirk and Myrtle Newkirk, marking the first known marriage by a woman in the state. The couple will reside in the city.
Farmers in Orwell sold 349 turkeys this week for about $2,100, averaging 85 cents per pound. About 250 birds sold in Petersburg and 150 to dealers elsewhere. Experts note turkeys thrive when left to hatch and range, while caging often harms their growth.
The Alpha Delphi an Chapter hosts an annual party for children on Saturday afternoon December 3 at the School Building. A Christmas tree Santa Claus and gifts of toys candies and fruit will brighten the event. A hearty welcome is extended to all children not expecting Santa at home this Christmas.
Floyd McClellan of near Algiers faced a Petersburg grand jury finding evidence of a road house operation. Deputies searched his home after a jitney ride to the scene and recovered several jugs of liquor and pounds of sugar. McClellan denied guilt at a hearing and was bound over to circuit court on liquor violations with bonds set at 1500 each.
Harry Akridge son of Charles Akridge a city civil engineer and Georgia Berlin daughter of Mr and Mrs William Berlin were married yesterday at four o'clock Rev E M Hale officiating. The couple will reside in this city where Akridge helps install the new sewerage system. The groom has lived in Petersburg most of his life and the bride is active in Winslow society.
The remains of Frank Simmons will arrive in Winslow this Friday afternoon at 3 30 from Madison Illinois. The body will likely go to the Baptist church for services conducted by Rev E M Hale with interment at Oak Hill cemetery. Simmons former Winslow resident aged about 50 left after marriage to Miss Julia McConnell and has since lived in Madison. He is survived by a wife and son, now married in Colorado, plus a brother Bert of Illinois and a sister Mrs Maude Moseby of Princeton Indiana.
Rayilton Willis, a local poultryman and dog fancier, expanded from a small Petersburg operation to a forty acre farm three miles southwest of Petersburg. He hired John Robling to run the farm and kennels, focusing on pedigreed beagle hounds. The venture grew into a leading midwest producer with high demand and careful care of the animals.
Mrs Francis Usery wife of John Usery died at her Winslow home Saturday at 2 a m after months of illness. She was daughter of Mary and Ashall Whitman and had six living siblings. She leaves a husband and four children two of whom died in infancy and one nine year old daughter who passed away two years ago. She joined the Baptist church years ago and lived faithfully by its teachings. Funeral services were at the M E church Monday at 10 20 a m led by Rev E M Hale. Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery. Mrs Harry Ault and son Hardee of near Orwell visited town Thursday.
Mrs William Limp was seen shopping in Evansville on Tuesday, seen at local stores and markets during daytime hours. The brief note places her activity in the city with no mention of accompanying people or specific purchases.
The Rev J T Orton former pastor of the Main Street Presbyterian Church at Petersburg died at his Kendalville home after eleven days of illness. Born 1869 at Monticello he studied at Wabash and McCormick, served in Indianapolis Howe Petersburg Williamsport and Kendalville. Survived by wife Mary Fitle and two children Marjorie and Richard, with several siblings and in laws. Funeral set for Sunday at 2 30 pm at Petersburg Presbyterian Church with local pastors officiating. burial Lakewood Cemetery.

Kellams the Vincennes Cream Company manager has opened a modern grocery store in the Smith building on Main Street at Ninth street, replacing the Indiana Produce Company. The store is owned by Drof and Kellams and managed by Kellams.
Virgil Borden 175 pounds from Petersburg faces Dayton Ohio wrestler Gratts 168 pounds in a highly anticipated match at the Dougan Billiard Parlor on December 29. Borden trained with the Mysterious Conductor for a year and is said to be in prime condition. Kratts is famed as a top Ohio wrestler.
