Petersburg Labor Day Draws Large Pike County Crowd

Petersburg invites a massive county crowd for Labor Day festivities with coal miners farmers and colored residents joining in. Highlights include a 4000 pound coal chunk auction for the Mess Fund, a wrestling match between Dare Devil Smith and Teddy Coe, a race between Morgan & McKinney’s trotting mare and Chandler’s pacing horse, and a band led parade with contests from centipede to greased pig. Admission is 25 cents for men 15 cents for women and 1 cent for children.

Pike county men register for war service in Winslow

Thirty four young men born between June 5 and last Saturday registered with the conscript aboard at Winslow under presidential order. The list includes Franklin Chesser, Henry Conrad, Fred Phillips and others. Most are expected to be called soon, with unmarried men prioritized by war department policy.

Bravery Citations Highlight Lt Col Frank Adams of Petersburg

Gen Pershing cites Lt Col Frank H. Adams for bravery. Adams, born 46 years ago in Petersburg, rose from private to lieutenant colonel during his service in the Spanish American War and the Philippines. Mess fund social cake sets county price record

At Orwell Tuesday night the popularity cake sold for 122.35 dollars in a mess fund social. Miss Marsentus Shelton won 6080 votes, Miss Alta Whaley 5775, and Margery Of fil 3.85. Attendees included Harve Carter D W Gladish Claud Elmore Sam Bement Shirley Mc Kinney William Berridge and Ferd Veeck.

Ayrshire Trembles as Slacker Train Dazes Town

Eight hundred men described as bums and I W W s arrived by a nineteen car special under Federal guard to Ayrshire nine miles south of here. They looted homes, tied a mule to a train car and caused property damage including a lessened but feared toll on a citizen’s automobile. No deaths were reported though four were said injured on the train. Local residents endured a brief, chaotic uproar before the train sped away.

Oklahoma Going Republican Says Former Resident Carl English

Carl English, a former Pike county youth now living in Oklahoma, visits relatives and predicts Oklahoma will vote Republican this fall for the first time in its history. City Marshal Whitney quits his post on September 1 to return to coal mining. The town board will appoint a successor at the September meeting after his commendable record of active duty. George Miller resigns as janitor of the public school, planning to coal mine again, while Louis Spillman returns from Battle Creek to resume school work this fall.

Death of Prof N C Johnson Aged Educator Near Oakland City

Obituary honors Newton Carr Johnson born July 10 1855 in Pike County Indiana died August 23 1918 near Oakland City at 63 with long career as educator. He taught at Oakland City College served as dean of the Normal department and influenced modern farming and rural life through research and guidance to area farmers. He married three times and left children, including Robert Hugh and Howard Wilfred Johnson.
