Labor Day Celebration in Pike County at Petersburg Fairgrounds

The largest Labor Day event in Pike County in years will be held at Petersburg fair grounds on Monday September 2. Citizens from neighboring counties may attend as events run from morning to the grand ball game in the afternoon. The day features horse racing greased pole greased pig wrestling a novelty race drills and a ball game with Atlas No 1 against a visiting team. Proceeds go to the county mess fund with oversight by the fund and labor groups.

Local conscription board lists county inductees

The board names county youths required to report for training camp between August 26 and 31. Initial plans to send some to Camp Custer are canceled with no definite destination yet. possible camps include Sherman or Taylor. Alternates are listed after the main names.

A big ice cream supper to aid the mess fund is planned for Saturday night August 31 at the Need More School House five miles east of Petersburg on the Washington road. The event features a popularity contest and a Kaiser card game tied to a Bow man incident.

Registration Saturday for 21-year-olds in county

All men who reach 21 between last June 5 and tomorrow must register with the conscription board at Winslow. Those who turned 21 since June 5 should register. It is stated that about 25 or a similar figure will participate.

Cold feet halt planned hoss race race foreclosure

Clark Chandler and Shirley McKinney backed by greenbacks tried to back their horses with stake holder S C Hyter keeping watch. By eight o clock Hyter called off the race and refunded both owners who then left for the night. A labor day event at the fair ground is teased with a boss race between the two owners driving their own horses and a big ball game.

Boy Driver Causes Head-On With Station Wagon Car

Everett Luttrell and family escaped serious injury after a Ford collided head on with a larger car driven by Marshall Robling’s son near Winslow. The Ford was wrecked, but the Luttrells suffered only minor bruises while the Robling vehicle escaped with little damage and the boy was unharmed.

No Exemption 10 Is Asked by Pike County Candidate

Ferp P. Veerk, Republican nominee for Clerk of the Pike Circuit Court, declares he will not seek deferred exemption if elected. He notes age increase to 45 for selective service and says a county official has no more right to exemption than any citizen. He adds Governor Goodrich may appoint a deputy to serve until his return from service.

William Keiser of Augusta, son of Adam Keiser, among Pike county selectives at a training camp, was furloughed home when a revolver discharged while he tried to shoot rabbits, injuring his right great toe at his father in law’s home.

Backed Down Hill near Lockhart Plum Tree Stops Car

David Coleman of Lockhart hosted visitors Sunday in a Chevrolet. While older guests entered the house, two boys in the car released the brakes causing it to roll down a hill. It struck a plum tree near the base, which stopped the vehicle from more serious damage.

Oil gains seen from new wells and leases in Ohio field

A new well on the Lawrence Johnson lease for Ohio Oil Co is reported to yield 200 barrels and sits near the Snyder well. A rig moves to the John Kinman lease in the east field for further tests. Southern Indiana Holiness Association Camp Meeting in Oakland City

Owen Bottom Dead at 19 After Appendicitis

Owen Bottom eldest son of former county commissioner James B Bottom and wife of Patoka township died at St Marys Hospital Evansville at 3 pm Wednesday from appendicitis. He was operated on August 14 but failed to gain relief. He was 19 years old. Funeral arrangements had not been made when this paper went to press.

Attorney Dillin of Peters burg will give a patriotic speech at Pikeville next Sunday afternoon at 3 o clock in support of the Home Guard movement. A large attendance is expected as Pikeville hosts a sizeable Home Guard company and the community invites all to attend.

Atlas No. 1 faces Princeton at fair grounds Sunday

The Atlas No. 1 baseball team and Princeton meet Sunday at the fair grounds to raise funds for the mess fund. Princeton defeated Atlas 5 to 2 in the last game, and Nolan is expected to play. the event is billed as the best game of the year.

Dwelling Burned in Patoka Township Fire

The Stocker home in southern Patoka Township was destroyed by a noon Sunday blaze caused by a gasoline stove explosion. Mrs Stocker fainted but was unharmed. Mr Stocker saved a feather bed and assisted his wife before flames consumed the house.

Red Cross Notes Urge More Helpers For Surgical Dressings

The Red Cross explains 81 percent of wounded recover due to skilled surgery and nursing. They seek more workers to meet quotas for surgical dressings, noting the workroom opens daily. Garments are sewn, but tagging remains in a small room. volunteers are asked to bring needles and thimbles. Mr. Bogier maintains the electric fan and distilled water for comfort.

Prominent Physicians Leave for Overseas War Service

Dr. O. A. Byers volunteered for overseas duty and was commissioned in the Medical Corps and departed for Ft. Oglethorpe Ga. Dr. B R Clark holds a captaincy and left for Ft. Benjamin Harrison to join the Medical Corps. The firm Byers and Clark will be out of local practice until after the war as both doctors head to service.

Court Stops Fight Between Two Colored Fighters

A planned ten round match at Winslow last Friday was enjoined by court order. About two hundred spectators gathered, including several from Petersburg, but the bout did not occur. A future contest may be held if a final hearing finds it lawful under Indiana statutes.

Grasshopper ravages hit Pike county farms

W. T. 8. Hobson, a leading Cato neighborhood farmer, reported grasshoppers have eaten clover seed crops and destroyed six acres of corn. He noted many Pike county farmers complain of grasshopper damage across the area.
