Petersburg Racine Association's 1916 Race Meet Praised

The Petersburg Racine Association earned praise for its 1916 meet despite heat and rumors. Big races drew strong horses, with notable shows by Prof. Fink and Prof. Smiths band. The Centennial Pageant impressed 300 plus attendees, with parts on Indiana history and pioneer life led by Mrs. Stoops and Grover Sims.

Two Horsemen Drink Harmful Liniment By Mistake

Two men, John Montgomery of Paris Illinois and Dan OBannon of Paoli Indiana, drank wood alcohol based horse liniment by mistake. They became seriously ill with eye damage and risk of blindness. Dr Rice treated them as the poison proved deadly with few recovering eye sight in time.

E. & J. RR building water tank near Main street

The J. & L. Railroad Company will finish its large water tank by next week near the foot of Main street as pumping stations at Massey and Blackburn are discontinued. The city will supply water to the railroad at a flat rate of 25 dollars per month.

Marion township citizen seeks road establishment in county

Uncle Elijah Richardson of Marion township, veteran of the 80 Indiana Infantry, appeared before the county commissioners Tuesday to press for the establishment of a road in his township.

Oil man saved by swift action in Ford theft case

Roy Mitchell of Evansville, son of Dick Mitchell, is jailed on grand larceny charges after selling a Ford to an oil man for use as a jitney. The oil man recovered $200, thwarting the sale, and Mitchell and his accomplice were tracked to the depot and arrested. The car was returned to Evansville and the young woman owner reclaimed her vehicle. Mitchell faces up to two years in prison.

Farmer Mr. Tislow’s misfortune turns to relief

Farmer Tislow of near Alford lost 27 dollars and his pocketbook in Petersburg while coal shopping. The pocketbook was later found by Everett Fettinger of Winslow who returned it. A theft of meat occurred while the Tislows rested at Centennial Pavilion, but a kind thief left a ham. Perry Masters of Coats Springs visited town.

Big oil activity reported in local leases this week

Harry Atkins of Ohio Oil drilled the fourth Belle Thomas lease well three miles west and shot it Tuesday starting at 40 barrels. Powder Explosion Injures Two Miners in Muren Mines

Frank and Ora Johnson, 16 and 23, coal miners and sons of Monroe Johnson near Muren, were badly burned and injured when a miner dumped hot pipe ashes onto loose powder, igniting a powder can and causing a fierce blast. Dr. L. R. Miller treated them.

Big Watermelons Draw Record Prices on Rail Cars

Doty and Yates report exceptional melon sales with two loaded cars averaging over 88 pounds per melon and many exceeds 50 pounds. The two cars grossed 4175 dollars on the track. Receiver Kappes wins federal permission to issue certificates for $600,000 to improve the Evansville and Indianapolis railway. Work will rebuild the Rogers bridge over White River and upgrade roadbed, rails, and yards, with new engines and cars to meet rising freight traffic.

One of the closest county elections occurred last Tuesday in Monroe township as rock road improvements were approved by a margin of three votes. precinct tallies show Arcadia 56 for, 62 against. Spurgeon 124 for, 110 against. France 40 for, 110 against.
