Fred Gilchrist Is Killed In Mine Accident

Fred Gilchrist aged 29 son of Jacob Gilchrist of Petersburg was instantly killed in the Black Burn mines Saturday afternoon. A premature signal to hoist the cage caused the tragedy when a coal lump struck the signal rope and rang the bell to engineer France. The cage began moving before Gilchrist was ready, he was crushed between the cage and wall, and fell to the shaft bottom. The other worker narrowly escaped injury. His body was brought to Petersburg for funeral services by the Rev. A A Cohn, two oclock Monday, Walnut Hills cemetery interment. Local United Mine Workers joined the service. Gilchrist, a Petersburg native, left a wife and child and many friends mourn his loss.

Child Killed In Oakland City Railroad Accident

Charles Woodruf, 12, son of Mr and Mrs Alva Woodruf of Oakland City, died Monday near the E and IT Station after a collision involving an E and I train and a Southern line. He was a grandson of Mr P H Lamb and described as a boy of fine character and promise. The tragedy cast gloom over the town with railroads slicing through its center.

Stubblefield Rites Hold After Sudden Death

Charles Stubblefield, a longtime resident of Pike County, died after a brief illness. He was 28 days past July and leaves a wife and three sons. He was noted for his helpfulness and popularity among local friends. Mrs Hisgen and husband were seen at the races nearby.
