Virginia forecast calls for warmer temperatures in the eastern portion tonight. Rain is expected in the south by Wednesday with a drop in temperatures overnight Wednesday.
The Ladies Missionary Society of Market Street M E church hosts an entertainment Friday at 8 pm at the church to raise funds. Music by local talent and readings by Miss Daisy Willson headline the event for a good cause.
Prohibition era note from Harrodsburg Kentucky reports that a Jamaica ginger and alcohol solution, used as liquor substitute in local option areas, is suspected to have caused the death of Fred Britton who died under mysterious circumstances last night.

The Virginia Anti Saloon League holds its state convention at Epworth M E church in Norfolk with welcomes from Rev Geo E Booker and Rev J Sydney Smith. The meeting May influence stance on a state prohibition law with potential executive committee use of discretion. Delegates expected range from 250 to 500 as the largest gathering yet. Whitehorne Scoggin advertise a bona fide cheap sale in Wednesday’s issue.
Mr. Frank E. Hall, a supervisor at the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, is appointed General Superintendent of Ordinary Agencies. An old Petersburg boy, Hall has twenty years of service and strong standing in Petersburg and across the South.
Grand Chancellor John Halliwell Dickinson will pay an official visit to the two Pythian lodges in Petersburg next Thursday night February lth during Naomi lodge regular meeting. Dickinson, an eloquent Episcopal divine, is expected to inspire an overflow crowd as revival in Pythianism grows. All lodge members urged to attend.
Mrs Daniel Lyon died at the family home in Brooklyn New York after an illness of three months Her husband Mr Daniel Lyon and her son Mr David A Lyon were informed The deceased formerly Miss Annie Broadnax of Petersburg was a well known Petersburg lady The family moved from Petersburg to Baltimore about 1870 and then to Brooklyn where she resided Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery Brooklyn.
Claude Oates, youngest child of Mr and Mrs J E Young, died this morning at 315 High Street after several days of pneumonia illness. Funeral notice appears in another column.
In Rome on February 8 Prince Kiniyoshi Kimi special envoy of the Japanese Emperor received the Collar of the Order of the Annunciation from the Italian king. This marks the highest Italian decoration and creates a bond of cousinship between the wearer and the king.
Justice Plummer presided as Wm. Davis colored was discharged on larceny. Ira Payne colored received assault conviction with a $250 fine and costs. Rosa Smith colored fined $5 for misdemeanor. Kid Mattox colored fined $2.50 for city ordinance violation and A Stein also fined $2 for ordinance breach.
Mr. Thos. W. Taylor, a popular Petersburgh youth, has been named local freight and passenger agent for the Phillips' Steamboat Line. Patrons can expect courteous consideration and prompt attention from him.
A deaf and dumb colored woman named Catharine died at 9 oclock this morning at the City Almshouse where she had resided for fifteen years. She was sixty years of age.
Tampico Mexico Feb 8 The Dos Bocas volcano near Tampico has opened an 8 inch hole to a 16 inch crater covering over 40 acres. Water and oil temperatures rise daily and scientists expect molten lava to flow from the crater soon as pressure builds. The lake is a boiling mass of water producing many millions of barrels daily with unknown underground water sources.
Judge Holt in Grafton issues injunction at complaint of Grafton Window Glass Co against National Glass Workers Union officers and sympathizers from interfering with plant operations. Plant runs non union with workers brought from Sisterville. Strikers disrupted placement of replacement workers as Edward Herbert directs actions. Non union men decline conference requests and cite cooperative plant plan in Sisterville.
Congressman Samuel W. McCall of Massachusetts appears to be the likely successor as Dartmouth College president, amid long consideration by the trustees since President Tucker announced retirement plans. McCall has long been the trustees’ favored candidate in prior rounds of selection.
Fire on the factory fifth floor of Milton T Elliott & Co. destroyed the plant and its contents. Loss listed at 30000 with 10000 insured. Principal damage centered on nuts both cleaned and uncleaned, with several hundred bags received that day.
The Board of Aldermen held a regular monthly meeting with President Jones in the chair. Mr Davis sworn in to fill a vacancy. Reports from city officers were read and acted on. Streets were noted for repair, especially EF Washington street. A Poole resolution for a six inch water main with five fire plugs on upper Halifax street was sent to Public Improvement Committee. The council declined to concur with issuing 480000 bonds for school purposes and converting Anderson school to a temporary high school by 8 to 0.
Amusement review notes large audiences at the Virginian Theatre for last night’s vaudeville. The program today features Jerry The Booby Boy, a lively musical comedy. Acts include No 1 Going to the Ball, No 2 Baby Eileen, and No 8 Brown's Jealousey. Tomorrow offers pictures, songs, and vaudeville with matinee at 3 30 and 4 30. Doors 7 p. m. at the end of show times. Cockade continues with pictures and illustrated songs, with special attention to ladies and children.
The Firemen's Relief Association of Petersburg was chartered by the Virginia Corporation Commission yesterday. Incorporators include E. V. Farley, James Weddell, Mortimer Williams, Wm. H. Willcox, W.A. Thayer, W. T. Miller, and T. H. Harrison. The group provides relief to injured and disabled firemen with no capital stock.
A mob of black residents assaulted Sheriff J. M. Hoff in Humble Texas, firing 15 times and forcing him to flee with a knife. A large posse is forming for arrests as a serious race riot looms after Hoff sought to arrest a man charged with murder. In Mississippi, Roby Baskin, 18, confessed to fatally shooting Rev. W. T. Hudson after alleging robbery.
Mrs Mary Walker a domestic in the Thomas B Sweeney household confessed to attempting extortion after receiving letters demanding 500 under threat of death She read a Black Hand tale, decided to mimic the scheme and was identified by the paper on which the letters were written A butler tipped off police and she was jailed widow of six weeks had served the Sweeney household briefly
Senor Arosemena, Panamanian minister to the United States, filed a formal protest at the State Department over Representative Rainey's remarks accusing President Obaldia of dishonesty and graft in the Panama canal deal. The protest seeks expunging the speech from records and an apology, but the State Department noted privilege limits and no direct Congress action. Secretary Bacon would not discuss the protest.
Harry St. George Tucker, candidate for governor, travels to Norfolk and says his platform will cover public questions including local option versus statewide prohibition. He maintains his long support for local self government and the local option laws, and opposes statewide prohibition.
The Rev. K A Kelly of St Lucy's Jersey City urges parishioners to choose saintly, plain names for children over fashionable or pagan names. He cautions against girls named Flossy Evelyn Dukes Lillian and boys named Homer Socrates Hannibal, recommending Mary Agnes Lucy Teresa or Margaret as preferable choices.
London Feb 8 report that cabinet ministers have reached agreement on naval policy. The proposed program will include six Dreadnoughts as part of the new shipbuilding plan.
