Petersburg Lodge of Elks held its annual Memorial service in the Academy of Music with a large gathering. The ceremony honored departed members including John W. Hays and Samuel A. Gentry, featured prayers by Rev. E P Dandridge and Rev. Dr. Richard Wilkinson, and an address by Hon. Samuel L. Kelley of Richmond. Officers led the exercises and the lodge highlighted its West Table Street home and active civic role.

The Health Department recorded 41 deaths in October including three non residents. White deaths totaled 13 and colored 28 with a mortality rate of 10 per 1000 for whites and 30 for colored. Of the deceased 11 were under five and 2 over eighty. Seven deaths were coroners, sixteen bodies shipped away and four brought for burial. Major causes include tuberculosis seven, cancer one, pellagra one, heart disease five, Bright’s disease six and accidents two. Communicable diseases: diphtheria three, typhoid three, scarlet five. Births totaled 58 white six colored thirty two.

Death of Wilson Bell in freight yard crush
Wilson Bell colored employee of Virginia Grain and Feed Company was fatally crushed between two cars Saturday afternoon on Old Street while unloading cars on Pike street tracks. He died that night in Peters burg Hospital after being caught between bumpers. he was highly esteemed by his employers.
