Edward Gamarekian recalls Orangeburg South Carolina in 1955 a quiet town polarized by desegregation pressure after 57 Negro parents petitioned the school board for nondiscriminatory reform. White citizens formed a Citizens Council led by W T C Bates and Mayor R H Jennings Jr enacting boycotts against petitioners partners and NAACP members. Escalating reprisals cut Negro employment faced denied credit and milk bread and fuel supplies while boycotts grew and few petitioners withdrew. By autumn only 26 remained and the climate of fear persisted linking Orangeburg Summerton and Elloree to a broader struggle against school integration.
