A long wartime verse fragment praises Whig candidates and Polk opposition with mock political roasts and campaign humor. It reports Nauvoo mayoral and church trustees elections, and notes death of Samuel Le Smith, with a satirical farmer’s visit to Clay. Also included are brief items on British dispatches, Niagara Falls tragedy, New Orleans wharf fears, and a violent Marion Mississippi brick-yard incident.
A column urges Indiana Whigs to resist lethargy after a recent victory. It warns of mercenary opposition tactics in November, stresses vigilance and unity, and cites the broader national and regional impact of the win along with calls to action to preserve the Union against slavery and nullification.
