Death of T. J. Evans Esq in Burlington Iowa
Thomas Jevenson Evans long a resident and public figure in the state died on the 13th in Burlington Iowa. He was admitted to the Bar at twenty and practiced in southern counties before moving to the Upper Wabash region. A Fountain County legislator opposed in national politics, he chaired the Canal and Internal Improvements committee when the Mammoth System was adopted and twice served as Speaker of the House. A 1839 bid for Congress against Gen Howard followed by a noted campaign fatigue likely hastened his death. The Burlington Hawk-Eye and Macon Telegraph record his honors and the bar and civic response.
