Letters in Steunenberg trial reveal Orchard deception plan

In Boise on June 19 the Steunenberg murder trial heard key evidence as Harry Orchard testified about four letters he wrote to Mrs Orchard, allegedly dated from San Francisco Nome and Alaska, to deceive Mrs Orchard about Orchard’s whereabouts. Orchard identified the letters and Haywood's own reply to Mrs Orchard, with the defense facing attempts to show Orchard’s long conduct against Steunenberg.

Tragedy in New York: Wardell confesses double death pact

James Wardell told Coroner Acritelli he shot his wife in her West Twenty-fifth Street flat as part of a death pact, only to learn an autopsy showed she died from inhaling gas. The Big Four Limited from New York City derailed when it hit an open switch three miles east of Columbus Ohio on June 19. Four passengers and a fireman were seriously injured as engines and coaches piled up.
