Regular meeting of the South Amboy council discussed finances and street matters. Officials debated accounting reforms, bond options for street improvements, water and tax records, and a request to move a fire hydrant on John and Broadway.
A Monday night disturbance on Catharine street involved two female residents in a rough melee. The fracas began after a growler appeared and escalated with several knock downs before an eel spear was brought in to end the confrontation.
Power on the trolley line from Meinzer's corner to the cemetery is deficient and causes frequent stalls, especially around the Meinzer's corner. A large Public Service car was held up for a long period Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the slow and irritating nature of trolley travel during power shortages.
Mrs Arthur MecKenzie visited from out of town on Tuesday afternoon. Rev F Sechrist of Sayreville called on R L Mason of Hirst Street. James Dwyer and his companion Miss Anna Sutliff spent Monday at Coney Island. Mrs George Taylor of John Street plans a week at Ocean Grove. Mrs Hoffman of John Street visits Ocean Grove for several weeks. Miss Mary Mount, daughter of J A Mount, leaves Saturday for an extended Maryland tour visiting Havre de Grace and Baltimore. Mrs J R Skimmons of Main Street visited Asbury Park Tuesday. Miss Sadie Bunting of David Street was a Perth Amboy visitor Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Foxhill of Philadelphia...
The committee could not find a boat for all children to Midland Beach and instead arranged a round about route to Perth Amboy. They will take a ferry to Tottenville and train to Grant City where special cars will transport the group to the beach.
Numerous residents and visitors are noted in town on and off. Names include Miss Alice Snelling Mrs. J Dela field Wright Miss Halsie Garthwait Mrs. Wilson Waring and families from New York City and nearby towns. Social visits, outings, sailings, and parties are mentioned with locations Cliff road East avenue West avenue Mast avenue and Roselle among others.
Edward Vroom of Excelsior avenue owned a horse that bolted after a car on Am boy avenue near St. Mark's church at about 8 PM Monday. Miss Henrietta Oberworth, riding in the wagon, jumped out unharmed. Vroom suffered a severe left knee injury, was taken home for treatment by Dr. Walker Washington, and will miss work at S. S. White Dental Works. The horse turned into Goff avenue before being captured by John Swade. The automobile did not stop.
Fishing continued good with several large weakfish hauls reported from Princes Bay waters yesterday. George T. Androvette and W. W. Manee of Amboy Avenue caught ninety seven weakfish in a few hours. Alonzo Polhemus of Seguine Avenue landed a seven pound four ounce weak fish last week. Others reported at Valentines Hotel Beach and Ohicogge Beach house. Jesse Mose ly of Sandy Ground had a big haul Saturday.
The Sunday schools of A. M. KE Zion church and M. Zion church in Sandy Ground host an annual picnic at Boynton Beach on Colored Salt Water Day. The oyster dredge H. C. Ellis will shuttle pupils and attendees from Rossville dock at 9 and 11 AM, returning from the beach at 4 and 6 PM.
Pleasant Plains Postmaster Charles O Sprague received a new two and a half ton Master safe, fire and burglar proof, brought from New York on a large truck. The old safe was moved back to its origin. Various residents and visitors like A G Sprague P G Ullman Jr of Princes Bay Realty and Wood Harmon Co of New York enjoyed fishing and local errands around Princes Bay and nearby communities. Several residents were noted for visits, returns home, or travel plans, including trips to Sandy Ground Lakewood and Jamestown Exposition.
Mrs Percival Logan of Edgar's Hill entertains visitors from Ontario. The informal gathering includes local acquaintances and relatives, with light refreshments and casual conversation.
TOTTENVILLE Harry Cossey enlarges his ship yard erecting a large saw and planning mill at Railroad avenue. The building 40 by 75 feet, two stories tall, with lower floor for the mill and upper for a loft and carpenter shop. He has contracts for about thirty five more shows for the New York Central Erie and Lackawanna railroads and the Clinton Point Stone Company of New York City.
Community notes from Tottenville recounts visits and visitors including Miss Marion Staib from Newark staying with relatives in Amboy avenue and Madelene McDonald from Rosebank visiting cousins on Bentley street. Local civic life includes a Daughters of Liberty meeting, a police response to a family quarrel, and a lumber wagon incident in Pleasant Plains.
The fourth anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Shea was held at their new Amboy avenue residence near Elliott avenue. About twenty guests from Amboy and Pleasant Plains attended. Prizes for games included ornaments awarded to Mrs. Andrew Sprague, Mrs. William David, Miss Marion Cole, Allison Androvette, and Edwin Shea. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Shea. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. William Swade, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Shea, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew M. Sprague, Mr. and Mrs. William David, Mr. and Mrs. Allison Androvette, Mrs. Martin Fisher, Miss Ida Ryder, Miss Mia Miller, Miss Ella Butler.
A Staten Island Lodge B P O Elks delegation travels to Philadelphia for the annual convention. Past Exalted Ruler George W Stake leads the lodge contingent with Frank J Crystal Frederick S Mullen Louis J Heymann and others guiding as headquarters are at the Colonnade hotel. A large group plans to join the parade the next day.
Captain Joseph Gehegan of the sub precinct police reports Patrick Manix a seventy nine year old Rossville resident who was found ill and starving in a Glenn avenue home. Patrolmen Bloodgood Streeter and Newman transported him to the city and he was later sent to the S R Smith Infirmary in New Brighton for treatment.
Marion Haines daughter of Mr and Mrs William Haines of Main street was taken to the 8 R Smith Infirmary yesterday about 10 o clock suffering with appendicitis. Dr David Coleman of Amboy avenue had cared for her for a week or more. The operation was performed by Dr William Bryan of New Brighton and Dr Coleman about 12 o clock shortly after arrival and was successful so far. She was resting comfortably and every hope is entertained for her speedy recovery.
John Robedee of Main Street narrowly avoided being hit by a automobile on Broadway near Henry Street yesterday afternoon around three. He tried to cross with a loaded wheelbarrow of cement, stumbled when turning to dodge the vehicle, spilling the contents. A young lady helped him to his feet, and he continued on. The machine passed on.
Mr and Mrs Edgar Campbell traveled to Maine for vacation. Mrs Edward Morris hosted friends Monday evening. A number of valuable lots have been bought and sold recently and cottages will be erected this fall. Real estate has taken a boom and many improvements are promised for the near future.
