The Board of Aldermen discussed the Raritan river bridge approach but took no action. Reportedly they want a citizen petition to start work, with estimates suggesting at least 50 000 dollars needed. Citywide tax funds would cover the project as a whole, not just adjacent property owners.
Special to the Evening News reports in New Brunswick that the damage suit against the American Smelting and Refining Works of Perth Amboy, brought by Michael McGuire, was renewed today but again non-suited by Justice Fort.
The Danish M. E. Rev. Dr. J. B. Chadwick will address the Quarterly Conference in the lecture room at 7:15 PM and preach at 8:00 PM. A note promotes Sexton’s Anti mosquito for bites.
Newark lawyer for Central Electric Company filed affidavits and a bill of complaint with Vice Chancellor Stevens to restrain Carteret Company from erecting poles and wires in Woodbridge. Weigel for Carteret sought a modified injunction. court ordered pending final hearing to determine if the lighting commission can grant contracts allowing rival lines on similar routes. The dispute involves contracts in Woodbridge and other towns, with Central holding broader lighting work and Carteret locally owned.
The H. O. F. Koch employees Mutual Benefit Association of New York will hold its annual excursion to Boynton Beach Saturday afternoon. The steamer Richmond and the barge Vanderbilt of the Stalin line will leave 129th Street and Hudson River at 1.30 p.m.
A drowning man Edward Jefferies, 45, laborer at Atlantic Terra Cotta Works in Tottenville, was found at the North American Fire Proof Plaster Company dock after a swim. Two Tottenville boys found the body and coroner Shaffer ordered a morgue wagon. No relatives in Tottenville. he leaves a wife and child in New York. Police return body to water awaiting wagon from morgue. Crabs had fed on remains. 30 cents and two pawn tickets found in pockets.
The schooner J. H. Wainwright seized to satisfy crew wage claims of 200 dollars is set for sale by the marshal on July 15. Owner and captain Hiram E. Sogg defended the vessel amid clashes with a difficult crew after a troubled voyage from Boston with lath to Machias. The Bucksport, Maine vessel will be sold at the Perth Amboy Dry Dock.
James McGreal was sent up for fifteen days this morning by the recorder on a charge of being drunk and disorderly, preferred by Samuel Carlin. John Tokash was locked up last night, seen acting suspiciously, but discharged this morning. An excursion of ladies and children from out of town passed through this city en route for Boynton. They filled two trolley cars. Drag Store SROs.
Last night the boss painters and the Painters Union reached an accord over non union workers in town. Bosses agreed to discharge out of town men after union pressure. The union had refused to admit them, and persuaded bosses to remove the non union labor. Most painters are back at work today. The masons started this morning laying the foundation for St. Marys new church. Six masons are employed with more to be added in days. Foundation work will take about five weeks and total mason work for the church is expected to last about a year.
Fishermen flood the bay with weak fish driving wholesale sales. Three sloops reportedly carried large catches sold at 25 cents per string while some boats dumped unsold fish. Ful ton Market received many hauls as local Perth Amboy men fish today. Delicious ice cream soda 5cts at Sexton's Drug Store.
Inmates of Schiller's hotel on New Brunswick avenue awoke about 2 am to find Joseph Kibla, a 45 year old German boarder from Williamsburg, lying beneath a second story window after falling from it. He sat on the sill for air, lost balance, and fell backward injuring his spine. Patrolmen and Dr. Lund responded, Kibla was made comfortable and sent to the hospital.
Mrs O Lee Straub plans a Bethlehem visit this Saturday to see relatives of her husband. Jack O'Brien of Philadelphia visits his sister Mrs Addicks on High street. Edward Oleson from the Perth Amboy Trust Company begins a two week vacation. J L Howe & Co on Smith street install a new safe. Miss Margaret Hart leaves for Norfolk today and will proceed to Farmville for the summer.
The Perth Amboy Savings Institution lists hours for the bank. Saturday hours are 9 to 12, other days 9 to 3. Monday and Saturday evenings extend to 7 to 8. Holidays are excepted.
William Keenan of Oak Street says he and his wife adopted the boy, a son of his wife's sister, after his birth in Elizabeth. He accuses Mr and Mrs Englisby of Newark of trying to seize the child in an alleged blackmail scheme and has retained lawyer Joseph Stricker to pursue the case and stop the trouble.
A party of about fifty enjoyed a moonlight voyage on the steamboat Lottie B. last night. The weather was perfect and the trip down to Midland Beach and back ended around midnight with all aboard in high spirits.
The maximum temperature reached 92 degrees and the minimum fell to 67 degrees. The reading reflects a warm day with cooler overnight temperatures.
