What Brought Prosperity and Tariff Debate in 1899
The Perry Advertiser reflects on claims that war spurred general prosperity and weighs tariff history. It compares Wilson and Dingley tariffs, citing 1894 1897 export growth under Wilson and modest gains under protectionist policy, noting political bias and shifting attitudes toward freer trade. The piece argues lower tariffs aided exports and opened markets, while acknowledging flaws in the Wilson plan and predicting a move toward liberal tariffs to safeguard future prosperity.
