Perry city notices and social notes record visits from Des Moines and Adel figures, weddings, funerals, and business updates. Local professionals advertise services while residents attend expositions, lakes, races, and church gatherings, with rail and road travel shaping weekly activity.
The Forepaugh Sells show attracted about five thousand for the afternoon and up to fifteen hundred at night. Audiences praised the trained seals, the three male equestrians, and the trapeze acts, noting the menagerie as the largest and finest yet seen in Perry. The circus arrived late from Council Bluffs, and the parade ran near on time before departing for Ft. Dodge.
Howse and Lot in Dawson offer a good six room house near new with a barn. Property to be sold cheaply for cash at the end of C L Andrews by Ridenour or Rey.
The Perry District announces its annual fair dates with plans to meet past standards despite the absence of a state fair and fewer smaller fairs due to the Omaha exposition. Premium lists are being prepared, with no major new features expected. Notable notes include Major General Shafter’s prominence and a photograph owned by Ed C. Wilcox showing Shafter in older, slender days, contrasted with his current 300 pounds. Detective Johnston, McNatt, and McLaughlin from Des Moines visit as light-fingered crime reports surface.
Des Moines parade crowds drew attention to veteran detective Johnston on Second street. The long-serving officer, famed for quick crime-solving and skillful questioning, scanned the dense throng for suspicious individuals as residents prepared to greet a visiting show.
A proposed consolidation aims to unite about thirty independent Iowa telephone companies to compete with Bell. Perry Telephone would likely be a major factor, with a meeting planned in Des Moines to outline the plan. The initiative envisions merging stock via a board of appraisers and extending reach to county seats and toll exchanges.
The Jefferson widows plan a grand party at Mrs J A Hassett's home next Thursday evening. Seventy eight invitations issued, reflecting a sizable widow population in the city. The piece suggests a later widows picnic and hints at a merged ex-married group.
County residents north of here hear rumors of a new railway line, possibly a branch of the Great Western, starting near Hampton and passing through Webster City, Paton, Jefferson, and southern Webster County. The plan aims to reach Omaha via Chicago and Minneapolis routes, though surveys have often failed. Local concern centers on whether Jefferson gains division status or shops, with enthusiasm tempered by doubt over past project failures.
