Thos F Cogen of St Nicholas Hotel murdered on a sidewalk by T White. Fremont arrives in St Louis to a warm welcome. The President declines to pardon Captain Gordon tied to the slave trade. Rebels retreat from the Potomac, batteries withdrawn. Sumter capture confirmed. Bermuda reportedly ran the blockade off Savannah with 2000 bales of cotton for Liverpool. Fremont plans to stay in St. Louis for now.
Reports from southern papers through the 28th describe the bombardment that began on the 21st and lasted eight days until Col. Brown stopped firing on the evening of the 29th. Rebels claim 16 killed and partial destruction at Fort McRae and the navy yard. Union forces reported two reinforcements for Brown.
