Penticton Council Minutes March 4 1909
The Penticton council met on Thursday March 4 1909 with Reeve and Councillors Power Mark and Hatch present. They approved payments to S. C. Smith Lumber Co H Main Penticton Hardware Co B C Gazette C F Layton F S Wilson and others and discussed letters from MPs Ellison Shatford and others, a safe purchase request and office furniture sale offers. A petition for Ellis Street sidewalks was referred to the board of works. The provincial 1909 assessment roll was adopted for tax collection. The lamp for Main Street was ordered with a committee to place it. The meeting adjourned.

Confirmation Service At St Saviours Church
A confirmation service in St Saviour's church Wednesday evening drew a large crowd. The Bishop of Westminster and Kootenay conducted the rite and spoke to the twelve candidates about the duties of their step. The service featured simple music and hymns. The altar cross and book-rest were dedicated by the Girls' Guild, under Mrs Gahan. Bishop Dart plans to return soon to consecrate the church and grounds.

Japanese Menace to Canada Speech Spars Japanese Trade Value
March 9 Toronto. Mr Martin Burrell MP Yale Carboo told a large Canadian club audience that Japanese immigration is a live issue for British Columbia. He argued Japanese trade is not worth sacrifices and warned that 15 000 Japanese in Canada could threaten the nation, comparing to 50 000 Germans in England. The Ontario pioneer race should do the work in British Columbia.
