Hate that can't be legislated away James von Brunn's case
Richard Cohen argues that hate crime laws do not deter violence and misallocate punishment by tying crimes to protected classes. He notes von Brunn killed a Black security guard at the Holocaust Memorial Museum, questions which community is affected, and criticizes the expansion of hate crime statutes as pandering to interest groups rather than reducing harm. The column frames hate crime penalties as speech protection and warns of slippery slopes.

A crude reality about Waxman Markey energy bill
Kathleen Parker argues the Waxman Markey energy bill is poorly named and misleads on security. She notes it targets stationary CO2 sources, risks higher oil imports, and relies on preexisting measures like CAFE and biofuels to cut imports, while energy security remains uncertain despite environmental aims.
