ORCAA installs air monitors in Port Angeles area

The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency will place three new air quality monitors in Port Angeles with a fourth planned for Sequim by mid February. A staffer helped assemble them, saving about 12000. Data should start in coming weeks as two year study assesses biomass cogeneration projects impact. Temporary monitors read remotely from Olympia. Locations include Stevens Middle School Fifth Street fire station and Port Angeles Library.

Port Angeles Plywood Mill Demo Nears Ground Level

Excavators are tearing down the 180,000-square-foot former Peninsula Plywood building at 439 Marine Drive with completion expected by week’s end. Port of Port Angeles official Chris Hartman says the remaining 11 buildings on the 19-acre waterfront site will be cleared to salvage materials, leaving rubble for removal. The 175-foot chimney stack is being prepared for safe demolition after asbestos-laden paint is removed. A two-story office building will stay and may house a new tenant as the port plans marine trades development on a site with plywood mill history dating to 1941.

Public pays for lawmakers' hefty cellphone bills

State records show lawmakers, led by Sen. Jerome Delvin, regularly submitted cellphone bills well above typical plans. Delvin posted 180 plus monthly costs over two years, with one month at 309.21 and another at 382.75, often citing travel. He may seek a cheaper AT&T plan. public records reveal broad high bills beyond normal costs.

Forks to begin plans for fire replacement in March

Forks will start planning in March to replace a building that burned last fall. In his State of the City address, Mayor Bryan Monohon said the Forks Police Department will soon have two women patrol officers, a historic first. He spoke to about 60 people at the Forks Chamber of Commerce gathering at JT's Sweet Stuffs, with US Representative Derek Kilmer also addressing the group.
