Sequim elk herd crosses U.S. 101 again in move north

The Dungeness Roosevelt elk herd of about 35 cows calves and yearlings crossed U S Highway 101 Tuesday between 7 and 9 p m for the second time in two weeks and likely will cross other major roads in east Sequim. Wildlife coordinator Tim Cullinan said the herd was between Highway 101 and West Sequim Bay Road near the Holiday Inn Express and showing signs of continuing north. Drivers photographed the herd as they lingered by the road. The group is hungry and moving longer distances daily while hay fields have been cut for winter and fallow hay offers better forage in Happy Valley south of 101. The elk may seek Johnson Creek woods for protection but food remains scarce.
