Firefighters fought a massive forest fire near a Puget Sound mill timber company plant. Fifty firemen surrounded by flames rode a locomotive through smoke over a burning bridge to safety. Several were burned or blinded and many sickened by smoke as flames destroyed eighteen buildings.

Runyan, a well known cowboy, withdrew his not guilty plea on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon and pleaded guilty. The case stems from a June confrontation at McNay Creek involving George Spearman, a colored cowboy, where Runyan drew and fired a weapon. Spearman was struck, hospitalized, and survived. Mrs Amanda Worman, 70, of Eugene, drowned in a shallow slough on her son Harry Mitchell’s farm near Dexter, about 20 miles southeast of Eugene. She disappeared from her home about 11 a.m. and was found in the slough. coroner cites possible accidental cause. Her son leaves a daughter, Amastella Moores of Portland.

Roy DeWitt Kerr, once of Pendleton, died September 18 in Salem after a yearlong illness. He is survived by brothers Paine Franch and Bert L Petting of Eureka, Amos D and Grower Hert of Portland, Hubert and Hert of Phoenix, and Charles L Hert of Spokane.
