Synopsis of New Registration Law

New registration rules require voters to register to vote, with deadlines of 60 days before city elections for inclusion on the roll. Registration may occur up to within 20 days of general elections or 15 days of special city elections, but at those times a registration certificate must be shown at the polls. One registration covers all elections unless residence or political changes require re-registration. Both men and women must register, registrations go through the county clerk by precinct, not wards, and affidavits before a notary public are no longer allowed if constitutional. Voters must provide detailed personal information to the clerk including name, age, occupation, address, birth place, naturalization status, duration in state, physical descriptors, precinct, residence details, and party name.
