Attendance tops three thousand as Pavilion hosts Chamberlain event with Miss Wishart of Pendleton Academy giving demonstrations of great merit. Awards announced, exhibits attract attention, and a lively program is planned for the evening at the fair.
Empire interest attaches to the program of De Caprio's band for the evening at the fair. In addition to a rendition of Anthore from Trotere by Mrs B Driscoll of Portland, who accompanies her husband, who is not a member of the De Caprio band, the program will include a number of features. Signo De Caprio will render two baritones, accompanied by a grand concert, and a clarinet solo will be played by Hughes. The program includes March BPO B, dedicated to Pendleton Lodge of Elks No 254, Overture Giovanna d Arco, a clarinet solo La sombula. Retital.
Oregon Governor George BE and Chamberlain are to be guests of honor at tonight’s district ball at Morle Hall with a 7:30 program featuring the De Ciprio band. The governor will speak between 7:30 and 8:00, followed by talks from Jefferson Myory and A. Bennett of The Dalress. A reception at Murtehat begins at 5:40 and runs one hour, with a procession of music and anticipation for the Jamestown fair next week. Yesterday’s fair drew about 2,000 attendees, free for Woodmen and visiting typicans, with strong livestock and prize captures by A. C. Ruby and his Percherons. The day also highlighted diversified farming ads and entries from RR, i, Grorsehmig of Coombs canyon.Markets on Rambouillet sheep and poultry prizes noted.
Major Lee Moorhouse leads with three top prizes in his Indian fotografe exhibit, winning first on the entire collection and on the 10 largest photographs as well as the largest and best collection. Miss Margaret Wishart demonstrates domestic science cooking at the fair rest room, with another session planned tomorrow afternoon.
The Eastern Oregon Medical Society elected officers for the coming year at Rodin Springs Baker County. Jacob Pringing Ontario was named president, J A Gelsendorfer The Dalles first vice president, A R B King Antelope second vice president, C B Saunders Union secretary treasurer, C J Smith and J A Rueter The Dalles alternates. Re-elected board of censors member Greeg Wallowa. Attendees toured the district fair and many returned home. others took the westbound train. Fish Commissioner Van Dusen studied hatchery feasibility on the John Day River near Arlington.
Reports from Sept 27 describe a tropical storm and tidal wave affecting Louisiana and the Mississippi valley. Wires fail to New Orleans cut off as the city floods up to ten feet in places and Lake Pontchartrain rises. Western Union notices indicate a hurricane blowing northward with widespread damage and communication disruptions.
In police court H H Mitchner veteran hotel runner was fined 25 by Justice Parker for carrying a concealed weapon. Har vey Boren bus driver was fined as an associate in the same session. Barrett and others faced fines for drunkenness as the judge and district attorney proceeded with the case.
Walla Walla news reports George Day, a prominent local farmer, was shot and killed while hunting on a ranch between Prescott and Pleasant View. He climbed a wire fence and, while grabbing his shotgun through, the gun discharged and the shot entered his side.
Roosevelt cabled Taft to land fighting men and assume military control in Cuba with the governor’s title. Taft to rule alone until elections. joint control considered but dropped to avoid dual leadership issues. Detachments and transports mobilize from Norfolk and various forts for a Cuba expedition.
The Paddle Jr Diction Woodcraft order grand managers, led by Mrs Florence Welly of Los Angeles, voted to invest 15000 in Portland bonds. Members listed include Mrs Clara Hilux Florence Colo Dr Lian Pollock Denver Annie Hawking Toledo Ore and Cor O Wilson San Francisco. They plan no meeting for six months as Pacific jurisdiction staff gathered for a week long session to prepare a new campaign.
At a heated New York Democratic convention Hearst led a ticket headlined by William Randolph Hearst. The party also nominated Loulia Chanter for lieutenant governor and John Whalen for secretary of state. Hearst secured 209 votes to Sulzer 129, with 224 needed for choice, and Bryan was endorsed for 1908 presidency.
Twenty one districts will run vigorous efforts through June to recruit new members. Each district will award prizes for the most new members, the highest percentage of growth, and the best exemplification of ritual work by local units.
Woodmen of the World held Woodman Day in Pendleton with a well run parade led by De Caprio’s band and 200 torches. A banquet at Eagles' hall featured toastmaster J. H. Lawrey and addresses by T. T. Grer Walter L. Toore Dr. J. Smith Rev. C. H. Neller and F. D. Pettitt. About 290 Woodmen enjoyed the program and Johnson's orchestra provided music. The Walla Walla uniformed team received praise for its precise performance.
A fishing party including Ed Latimer and his two sons found James Brown, 67, dead after slipping from a rugged ledge on the north bank near camp No. 4, about seven miles from Wallula. The body was located about 200 feet below, mangled from the fall. The party had set out for a day’s fishing earlier from Latimer’s farm, and Brown’s age and the rough terrain hindered aid.
Experts vouched for by the Interior department are guiding a government supervised road project east of the city. Five teams with a number of men are at work on the sample mile, with D. G. Haire engineer of construction, James V. Vishel civil engineer, and A. Wilbert roller operator directing supervision. Work duration depends on crew size and weather, likely taking several weeks. Citizens and observers are invited to monitor progress as the project serves educational aims. Fifteen foreigners were naturalized at Lewiston Idaho the first day of the current session of the circuit court.
There are 665 members of the order in Oregon with fifty seven new members in the past year and nine deaths in the same period. Most eminent members including Governor Chamberlain are present here or arriving this afternoon for a very profitable meeting.
The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Oregon convened in Pendleton to elect annual officers led by George H. Burnett as grand commander and Frank J. Miller as deputy. D. C. Agler reported membership at 665 with a net 45 increase. nine Knights templar have passed on. Governor Chamberlain attends tonight's reception.
N B Gerking displays large grains from the irrigated district near Bend. Pioneer J N B Gerking of Athena brings wheat alfalfa and Amathy from Crook County. Height records show six foot stalks with wheat four feet tall yielding 26 to 40 bushels per acre. Public school enrollment in Portland on September 20 reached 14 640, up 1200 from last year. projected total near 16 1000.
