A daytime express train near Troutdale was ambushed by four bandits who blew a hole in the car and fired on the engineer. The engineer was fatally wounded, a brakeman and several passengers were injured, and sheriffs pursued the robbers toward Portland. A suspect lies fatally wounded along the track and may confess before dying. another man, James Conners of Portland, was hospitalized after being shot in the head and is not expected to survive.

Rustlers and cowmen clash as outlaw escapes with killings
On September 24 in San Francisco a rustler named Joseph Roberts was caught removing a steer hide near Solomon Arizona from John Stockton. Stockton rode up with cowboys and a fight broke out. Stockton was shot through the body and several cowboys wounded. A Solomon posse besieged the house where Roberts hid. The gunfight persisted into darkness. Roberts sprinted to his horse and wounded three posse members as he escaped.
