Tutuilla Mission Revived Work Started by the Martyred Whitman
A brought revival at Tututilla near Pendleton follows the 60 year old Whitman tragedy. Missionary Cornelison, aided by Major Moorhouse, builds a native led church among Umatilla Indians. Intertribal gatherings grow, with emphasis on temperance and domestic enterprise, as Indians take leadership of doctrine and trustees.

Indian Mission on Umatilla Reserve Brims with Faith and Growth
The Umatilla reservation hosts about 1100 Indians with over 400 embracing Christianity, led by Rev. James Dickson of the Walla Walla tribe. Whitman era missions and Presbyterian efforts shaped today’s church, now run by red men, with farms, homes, and educated children marking progress amid lingering hardships.
