Four men in an auto burst into the Painters and Decorators union headquarters in Chicago and shot George Cameron, business agent for the union. He named a suspect as the motive, then Cameron and the assailants fled by fire escape and car. Cameron was dying as police arrived.
A message from Calexico Cal says Constitution Calvinta detachment defeated a federal party in Lower California with 17 dead and many wounded among government troops.
Francis Oulmet of Boston won the American open after a playoff with Harry Vardon and Edward Ray in Brookline Massachusetts. Oulmet finished with 72 total, Vardon 77 and Ray 75.
Four acres of potatoes and additional crops were planted on land donated by BE L Smith behind the high school. Twenty boys in the agriculture course, under instructor A A Asbahr, dig the potatoes to fund incidental expenses and garden improvements. Crop yields include broom corn pop corn Burham wheat two rows of yellow dent field corn and a dry land rape experiment showing good forage potential.
An unidentified woman about 40 and two children were struck on a Snake River bridge by a freight train in Ontario Oregon. The woman and a boy were killed and the girl was fatally injured. They had been visiting a fair and were returning home. Officers are trying to identify them.
Panama on September 10 reports the Pacific waters will join the Atlantic as the canal core nears completion. Authorities estimate ships may pass soon after the last dyke is blown, scheduled for October 10.

A slick bunco man fled The Dalles with 60 dollars in counterfeit schemes and left 20 high grade horses at a Klickitat county feedyard. Harley Dunn, owner of The Dalles feedyard, was among the hardest hit after he loaned 20 dollars and bought a horse team for 200 dollars expecting a 500 dollar sale. Officers say the man planned to use fake checks to fleece local merchants and steal the profits.
Mrs Sue Amanda Fleener born 1832 Bloomington Indiana and married 1849 to James Fleener a Mexican War veteran. They crossed the plains in 1851 to Oregon then Missouri for 22 years, Civil War nursing near Missouri, later La Grande, Joseph area burial. Six of her 12 children survive. body moved to Joseph for burial.
Archdeacon J H Pirahall of the Protestant Episcopal church dispersed a mob that threatened to lynch John Lloyd, who was under arrest for the shooting death of bartender Daniel Lily. The clergyman addressed the crowd and guided them to disperse and go home.
