French claim major success near Denlecourt with 12 hundred prisoners. German and Romanian movements shift along the Dobruja and Constanta corridor as Italians press near Trieste.
A brief advance in wheat trading is noted with price quotes from Chicago and Portland markets. In Chicago, prices opened around $1.40 to $1.49 with highs and lows cited, while Portland shows close at $1.00 with blue trim at $1.01. Sept reports from Sept 4 note Manitoba No. 1 white at 14e0 and No. 2 red western winter at 4d, with some quotes not published.
Washington DC September 18 Pacific States expect generally fair weather with temperatures above average during the week. Rocky Mountain and Plateau Regions anticipate generally fair weather with temperatures somewhat below normal.
President Sproule of the Southern Pacific told the state public service commission that a huge business surge caused a car shortage. He said forty five thousand additional cars were used during May June July and August. In July and August 1924, Oregon loaded 9218 more cars than a year earlier, with eighty two hundred cars carrying lumber and pine products.
Democratic Chairman McCormick returns from western trip reporting unity and growing strength for democracy. He conferred with Western leaders in Chicago and says Wilson will carry the water. Senator Owen promises strong Wilson support in Oklahoma as he prepares to stump.
City Attorney J Alger Fee served notice Saturday afternoon on County Judge CC H March to deliver city books held by the county back to the city. Judge March passed the notice to District Attorney Steiner to use his judgment. City library board asserts books left city hall without authority and moved to the new county building. whether this signals actual removal remains unclear.
The eldest son of the British premier, Raymond Asquith, is reported dead Friday as a lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. He likely fell in the Somme fighting.
News arrives that Idaho Governor Alexander will attend the Pendleton Round-Up this week. Jon Priest of the Oregon Short Line reported the governor’s arrival in Spokane and his planned escort to Yakima then Pendleton for Friday’s events.
Judge Phelps ordered a grand jury drawn and postponed all other jurors until Monday. Festivity week pauses jury trials as Pendleton returns to decorum. Grand jurors named: Fred K. March Albert F. Frederick Steiner, attorney for the plaintiff in Paradise Irrigation, filed a demurrer to the defendants Raley & Raley and Fee & Fee answer. The challenge tests the constitutional validity of the district irrigation act under which the proceedings are pursued, arguing the answer does not comply with the act. The district irrigation act, originally passed in 1895 and amended in 1913, 1916, and 1941, forms the basis of the contest.

Regina dispatch reports Premier Walter Scott of Canada believed dying from asthma. Visitors barred from the rooms as authorities observe strict secrecy about his real condition.

Louis Hodgen a prominent farmer and resident will be a Democratic candidate for representative from Umatilla County this fall. He replaces J R Maley who declined the nomination and joins W T Heaven of Branfield as east end nominees amid east end demand for regional representation. Hodgen previously partnered with Judge J W Male Noy and is seen as uniting East and Milton Freewater interests after years without a local legislator.
City outfits for gala week as entry books open and performers arrive from Oregon Colorado Oklahoma and Montana. Travel by train and auto swells crowds while ticket sales surge and hotels fill ahead of three day show. Bucking horse events and relay strings await final preparations with grounds to close midweek for the main event.

The dancing pavilion is complete, with smooth sanded floor and top music, while the Red Dog Gambling Palace roof becomes a woodland set. Paris report states France for first time uses an aeroplane squadron to lead a successful attack on Bouchavesnes north of the Somme. Twenty fast armored planes each with three machine guns charged German lines while officers directed from above. The attack drove Germans from trenches, with prisoners saying the enemy fled in panic. Allies plan to use aeroplanes frequently thereafter.
Two notable backers of the Round-Up arrive in Pendleton for the seventh annual show. Sculptor A Phimister Proctor and writer and traveler Charles Furlong join Judge C H Marsh and Mrs Lina H Sturgis for events. Proctor has been working with Nee Perce Indians and Sundown the bowman serves as a model for a major project. Proctor entered Sundown in the backing contest today.
A Presbyterian church located at the corner of West and Collet streets opened its doors to visitors during the three day thunder event. The altars and pews were accessible as part of the community outreach.
