Washington reports Orville Wright injured and Lieutenant Selfridge killed when a propeller failed and the aeroplane collapsed. Experts say the accident harms public confidence but does not negate the machine's value. Berlin conveys condolences through its embassy.
In Lemans France on Sept 18 Wilbur Wright sits alone in his aeroplane shed and refuses visitors. He is greatly distressed by the Ft Meyer tragedy and has locked himself in the shelter built for the machine. Wright says no flights will occur and postponements will be indefinite.
Washington reports government experts state the Wright aeroplane accident will not deter Orville Wright from pursuing flight as Lt. Thomas Selfridge dies and Wright sustains serious injuries. An altered propeller blade failed, causing the craft to overturn during a four by field flight at a height of six feet. Selfridge, among the U.S. air travel experts, is remembered as highly informed and promising for the service.
Vienna dispatch reports revolts feared in Galicia as peasantry starves amid crop failures. Officials clashed while attempting tax collection from Bukowina inhabitants. In Kupcina the uprising is fiercest after the death of Prince Lubo Mirekis. Franz Joseph’s personal influence momentarily restrains a wider revolt.
Forrest Smithson Dan Kelly and Alfred Gilbert headlined Portland day at the Salem State Fair as crowds cheered Oregon athletics. Ezra Meeker rode his prairie schooner and ox team, drawing attention beside the racing action. Meeker’s visit coincided with a record turnout near 30,000, while Charley 1D captured the Greater Salem purse for 2.08 pace.

Indianapolis on September 1s. Thomas Tageart, former national Democratic chairman, predicted a decisive Democratic victory in Indiana based on results from special elections to fill vacancies in the state legislature. He said the Democrats could carry the state by about 160000, with gains seen in Delaware and several counties.
An Australian crowd gathered at King George Sound to bid farewell as the Atlantics left Albany at dawn for the Philippines, sailing a day later than planned. The fleet aims to reach Mantle by October 1, with Admiral Sperry obtaining a coal-cut allowance of 100 tons for the voyage home.
In Bellingham Washington on September 18 a man hacked at his throat with an old saw during a disturbance at a county firm. He fought off bystanders as the attack continued, nearly ending his life today.
Sherman Texas Sept 18 John Hatfield in his cell says he will never go to California and that the statements were not accurate. He claims to be James Tanham wanted for the murder of six people in San Jose twelve years ago. Hatfield insists he is not Durham and offers to prove an alibi.
Seattle witnesses report the jury verdict that Nick Petrich, a Servian, was found guilty of murdering Marshal Harry Miller on April 10 and sentenced to hang unless the supreme court remands retrial or grants a new proceeding.
In Columbus and Chicago reports clash over Hearst claims linking Oklahoma Governor Haskell and Ohio Senator Foraker to the Standerd Oil Company. Haskell calls the charges false, cites mistaken identity, and notes an error in initials. Monett’s letter is cited as basis for the accusation, denied by Haskell.
In Cincinnati on September 18 Senator Foraker issued a statement backing the authenticity of letters read by Hearst in Columbus, tying Standard Oil to Ohio legislative actions. He denied renting, said employment by a corporation was not discreditable, and noted his Standard ties ended before his first Senate term. The letters allegedly dated spring 1900 mention bills Standard wished killed and referenced two enclosures a $15,000 check and a $14,500 check. Hearst claimed the bills in Congress produced strong backlash against Foraker as Standard’s agent.
In Los Angeles on September 18 Charles Vanfleet, once a Colorado superior court judge and congressional candidate, killed himself after reading a hunger letter from his wife in San Jachito. He had fallen on hard times seeking mining ventures in Nevada and blamed drink for his decline. His son reportedly refused to go to school due to lack of shoes.
Berlin September 18. The opening session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for the Promotion of Arbitration featured a major debate on whether all international disputes should be settled by arbitration, regardless of Hague conference articles.
The body of Major General Charles Edward Luard was found near his home along the Southeastern railroad. Believed to have killed himself by jumping before a train, he faced accusations over his wife’s murder in London. A note left behind mentioned bearing the burden of suspicions.
Wilcox & Co to occupy a reinforced concrete structure 54 by 200 feet costing about 8540 on the same ground as the burned Jones Implement building. Plans by T. F. Indianapolis September 18 Members of the legislature gathered at the cap tor for the opening of the special session called by Governor Hunley He says he will keep the lawmakers here during the whole campaign as necessary to pass the local option bill.
In Bellingham a man named J. A. Gefson was attacked from behind at the Great Northern depot. He was slugged and robbed of 50 dollars. The thieves provided no clues as they fled.
The district fair announces a full seven day program with speakers for Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday and Saturday including Dan Smythe J T Lee F J Lewis Governor Chamberlain U S Senator C W Fulton and W S Duniway plus E r Duniway and A Bennet as judge in the baby show. DeCaprin's band will perform each afternoon and evening.
Spokane reports Miss Jeanette Descamp sues Thomas J. Cort of Howard Coffman company for breach of promise seeking 25000 pounds. She alleges four years ago Coffman promised marriage, an engagement ring was given, a wedding set for June 1907, but repeatedly postponed and then declared the union off, with Studebaker Brock named as wealthly widower involved in the case.
In a severe Mercest electrical storm two residences near McCallister were struck by lightning. One man died and eleven others were seriously injured by the electrical current. Authorities report the storm as among the state’s fiercest.
After weeks of calm the wheat market moves upward with prices around 76 to 77 cents reported in Heppner and Pendleton. Buyers expect further gains as harvest finishes and ship capacity for export increases, while growers anticipate higher prices in the coming days.
