McAdoo party welcomed by Pendleton crowds at Round-Up

Western city Pendleton greets former treasury secretary William Gibbs McAdoo and party aboard a special train. The visitors tour the Round-Up grounds, view the bucking horse and relay workouts, enjoy a cow camp spread, and stay at the Hotel Pendleton until Saturday. The party includes Mrs McAdoo Miss Sally McAdoo Miss Valerie Vernam and others. The reception was organized by James B Sturgis and William McMurray.

Mra Anna Begerth aged 61 died after illness of several weeks She lived in Pendleton 40 years coming from Germany Her husband died earlier She is survived by two daughters Mrs Chester Kay of Pendleton and Mrs Roy Nerman of Boise She was a member of the Christian church and the Woodcraft lodge will attend the funeral tomorrow at 9 am from the Folsom chapel.

Washington Welcomes First Division Home

General Perwh today fed and reviewed the rear guard of the First division the last of 29 combat divisions to leave Europe. Carrying full equipment the division tramped through Washington along Pennsylvania avenue past flowers and cheering crowds. A week hence the division will be reduced to 65 regiments.

Relief urged as Texas gulf hurricane toll rises

Governor Olcott urged Oregonians to aid Texas relief efforts appointing Portland figures to lead. In Sinton and Corpus Christi over 260 dead, widespread destruction with 10 to 15 million in damage. A relief train arrived, refugees housed in tents, a temporary morgue crowded with grieving relatives, and a rescued baby found afloat in a box.

Noted Indian Buckaroo and Sculptors Model Jackson Sundown

Jackson Sundown, noted Indian buckaroo, arrives with his family for the Round Up in Pendietan from Lapwal Idaho. He is billed as a spectator not a performer, though he previously won the World Workiner championship and has ridden broncos here in competition. Sundown also claims fame for having power for sculptor A Philinititer Proctor in creating statues.

Thomas J Tweedy Postmaster Dies After Illness

Pendleton veteran Thomas J Tweedy died in Portland after a long illness. He served in the Civil War and later settled in Pilot Rock before moving to Pendleton. Survived by wife and daughter Dell Brown, he was active in civic life with Masons and other groups. Funeral at Presbyterian church tomorrow at 10:30 am with Masonic rites.

Cronin to Lead Local Post Office After T J Tweedy's Death

The Pendleton Post Office vacancy follows the death of T J Tweedy. L B Cronin, long time emplace in the office and seven year assistant post master, says the Civil Service Commission will fill the vacancy. If precedent holds, Cronin will be appointed postmaster for experience and priority.

Petition Would Bar Cigarettes in State

Salem Sept 17 Barring sale use or possession of cigarettes in Oregon is the aim of initiative petitions filed by D E Frost of Oregon City with the secretary of state. If enough signatures are gathered voters will decide in November 1920. The measure imposes penalties for dealers or individuals selling cigarettes with fines up to 100 or 5000 and jail time. Drake here Fred Drake of San Francisco is visiting Pendleton for the Round Up and staying with his brother and father. An out-of-town visitor is a real estate man.

Astorians Arrive Early for City Welcome

The Astoria party is due to arrive at 6 45 tomorrow morning with a parade planned and a warm welcome in Beling Pleoged. Mayor of Astoria will lead the contingent along with Clanade I Barr secretary of the Astoria chamber who has arranged the details of the visit.

Pendleton Ticket Push For Happy Canyon Event

Pendleton residents are urged to buy Wheat Uckets for Happy Canyon today. Tickets will be available at the Happy Canyon tent until 5 pm and at the offices from 7 pm each evening. Remaining tickets will be released to visitors for Thursday night and Saturday sales follow a public schedule.

Local seating houses may charge small advances over regular prices due to added expenses and equipment. Agents from both city and federal levels are on the lookout for profiteering, with many detectives active in the city to deter extortionate rates during Round-Up time.
