Covert’s Narrow Escape On Logging Train
J V Cevert, a German on Grande onde Lumber Co. logging train near Hilgard, narrowly survived after reaching for a broken pin lever as the engine backed. The fireman grabbed a brake beam to drag Cevert to safety under a car, suffering injuries but preventing instant death. He was taken to the Blue Mountain hotel after midnight with multiple broken bones and severe injuries.
