Constantinople on Sept 12 reports the war ministry ordered 16 divisions of army reserves to mobilize while Turkish officials deem war with Bulgaria imminent though not formally declared. Sofia notes a large militia call to the colors and predicts an imminent war basis for the armies.
W H Skinner of Hermiston accepts the Democratic nomination for Umatilla County representative in the legislature. He pledges to support the top U S senator's candidate, promote fiscal restraint, enforce law, maintain schools, improve roads, curb graft, and seek public-records transparency while serving Umatilla County. Dated September 11, 1912.
The forty sixth annual encampment of the G B was called to order today in Los Angeles at the auditorium. Lt Governor A J Wallace gave the address of welcome for California and responses were spoken by representatives of the Grand Army and its affiliated branches.
William J. Bryan announced he will start a solo campaign along the Roosevelt western trail, beginning in Denver. He plans to speak at every Roosevelt stop across Colorado Utah Montana Oregon Washington California Nevada, returning to Lincoln by October 2 for a rest before resuming the Roosevelt train following toward the November election. He will pay his own expenses.
The school board urged the ecity council to build a footbridge across the river in the west end to ease congestion at Washington and Fields schools. They cited unsanitary conditions at the old Field school and the need to connect the north side sewer for Lincoln School, with 240 south-side families and 150 north-side high school students to be served.
City council unanimously refused a petition by 22 Jackson Street property owners to have the city pay 50 percent of paving costs. The council called it a remonstrance scheme and referred the matter to the street committee, then adopted plans for the street project and a second resolution defining the district. Remarks by members criticized the petitioners. remonstrance filing window opened.
President Hurd and the fair board seek to bring the Oregon Agricultural College exhibit to the third district fair. They wire President W J Kerr for approval while locals assist. Reports note a strong urge from West End farmers for the display and progress by Secretary Lee Moorhorse on new fair features. Union county weed exhibit and Morrow county’s strong exhibit are to be sent here, with continued notes on future pages.
Washington dispatch reports Robert G Valentine has turned in his resignation as Commissioner of Indian affairs to the Interior Department. The move is to take effect at the discretion of Secretary Fisher who is in Hawaii. Fisher indicated he is undecided on action before returning to Washington and will await further advice.
Syracuse N Y September 12 Today is Governor's day at the state fair with Governor Wilson democratic nominee for president as guest of honor sharing with Governor Dix A committee greets Wilson and the democratic state committee meets to name presidential electors and a convention leadership slate Wilson is expected to address the fair and the state committee in advance of the October 1 convention in this city
Frank A. Garrecht, Walla Walla lawyer and noted speaker, will address a Wilson Marshall meeting at the courthouse to form a Wilson league promoting the New Jersey governor in the county. Bay senator John M. Gearin may attend. Garrecht will argue for a clean campaign fueled by logic and opposition to big money. Oregon voters regard Wilson or Roosevelt as the likely winner, with Taft fading.
At La Grande Roosevelt, hoarse but firm, rejects personal ambition as he defends the progressive cause. He denounces Taft backers and imported orators, taunts Oregon delegates as traitors, and says leadership should serve the people, not the personal gain. The visit drew about 6000 at the Union County Fair.
Donors Hamley & Co finish a $360 prize saddle for the 1912 Round-up bucking contest. Designed by F. J. McMonies with silver rosettes and white lacings, the piece features blued steel horn with emerald eyes and a bucking broncho engraving by C. M. Russell. The saddle will display in the Hamley window with a silver plate awaiting winner’s name.
Rebels led by Colonel Antonio Rojas and General Inez Salatir march on Agua Prieta, with 1406 rebels facing 700 federals including 400 Yaqui Indians. U.S. troops of the 9th Cavalry arrive at Douglas to guard the border as the rebels approach within three hours of the border. A southbound Sonora railroad train was held up near Nogales. passengers uninjured but baggage lost as rebels burned bridges and ditched a locomotive 74 miles south of the border.
A meeting of Inland Empire commercial club representatives was set for this evening to discuss keeping Open River Transportation Company boats running. Participants include former Open River site manager Smallwood from Portland and a Lewiston Idaho delegation headed by RC Beach and Wiallice K. Strubie.
Salem Oregon September 2 State Forester Elliot reports minimal fire danger this season with rains dampening woods. All federal forest patrolmen and state supervising wardens are withdrawn from permanent payrolls. A projected surplus of about 4000 dollars from Weeks funding and about 13000 dollars from state appropriations will result.
