State Textbooks To Remain In Use Through Year

Officials announce ongoing use of old textbooks where possible to reduce costs. Pupils may keep current books until completion, with exchanges limited to subjects not finished by year end. A list of required texts by grade is provided, with a formal announcement to come Monday morning at the start of school.

Woman in Portland Woman Runs Down Man in Seattle

In Seattle on September 4 Mrs. Baumgartner of Portland struck EB. H. Bryans 55 of the Western Union at Front Avenue and Cherry streets with an automobile injuring him seriously. She was arrested and posted bond. No charge will be filed while Bryans condition is unknown.

Six Die In Canadian Train Wreck Near Caledon

A Canadian Pacific passenger train from Martindale to Toronto derailed near Caledon Ontario on Sept 4, killing six passengers and injuring many more. The dead include Norman Tucker Melcherton John Thurston Water Falls James Hanks Pete James Butler W Armstrong Markdale Robert Carr Shelbourne. The locomotive jumped the rail after a down grade from Orangeville. five of seven cars derailed. The engineer escaped unharmed and no crew were killed. The six victims were in the smoking car beside the locomotive.

Bryan to Speak Twice in Oklahoma Territory This Week

The Democratic committee hires William Jennings Bryan to counter Taft by delivering two speeches in Oklahoma Territory this week. Taft condemned the constitution crafted by the Democratic convention and urged votes for Republican state candidates in Oklahoma.

Irrigation Dam Hale Completed and Directors Elected

At a meeting of the Umatilla Water Users Association in Hermiston directors were elected W H Skinner Fred Yatow H T Irwin and A C Crawford. Engineer John V Whittaker said the dam work is nearly done and the project may require further time before land openings for homesteaders are announced. The government has not set a date for land opening.

Prosecution explores land and timber fraud case

In United States court a team led by Judge M C Burch of Denver and Rush of Omaha, both longtime federal attorneys, seek action on land and timber frauds tied to Senator Borah and others. Rush arrived Sunday. Burch yesterday. both bring extensive prior criminal and equity experience. Judge John Waldo, former Oregon supreme judge, died at his Marion county home after two weeks illness. He was born in 1844 and served as a longtime state resident and public figure. A fire at Eburne near Vancouver caused over 50000 in damages, destroying several residences, a church and two stores.

Bellinger Fined for Gambling at Circuit Court

In a forenoon session Judge Bean fined Ed Bellinger $100 for gambling and allowing it. Bellinger pleaded guilty to two charges. sentence set for morning with $50 fines per count. Roy Connell’s sentence withheld as he may testify for the defense in the Means-Swayze case. The Hermiston election contest from Price-Means was addressed after a demurrer was sustained. an amended complaint will be filed. Part of the day covered trial progress and local legal actions.

Mrs Dora McDonald widow of millionaire Mike McDonald the former gambling king of Chicago has returned to the family home at 4801 Drexel boulevard. her husband is said to have barred her entry as she is accused of shooting Webster Guerin. Woman Driven to Despair Jumps From Windsor Window

Mattie J. Mills an inmate of the Windsor resort leaped from a second story window yesterday afternoon. Though shaken she escaped serious injury and was later examined for insanity by Dr W G Cole. On the physician's recommendation Judge Gilliland committed her to the asylum as a demented woman of 25. She had been known as Mattie Delancey at the Windsor, born in Nova Scotia, and appears of refined background. Dr Cole attributes her condition to distress over her life of late.

Oregon Land Fraud Prosecutions Near End of Era

The Oregon Daily Journal reviews the land fraud situation in Oregon and forecasts political moves. Bristol a U S district attorney for Oregon is to be quietly dropped from office and prosecutions end with over 80 indictments still pending. Francis Heney and William Burns will not return to assist, and Willam Bristol faces removal as congress convenes next December. Roosevelt may not renominate him.

Louis Glass Sentenced for Bribery of Supervisors

In San Francisco on September 4 the court sentenced Louis Glass to five years in San Quentin for bribery of supervisors. The judge cited Glass’s age and first offense alongside the crime’s breach of public trust, stressing that the punishment should be just and proportionate to the circumstances. Glass stood stunned as the sentence was announced.

J. B. Baker of Meacham plans to move his family to the city to enroll children in public schools. He will buy a home and return each winter until schooling is complete. Also noted, twenty seven young Indians have left the Nez Perce reservation for Carlisle, Pa, comprising 15 boys and 12 girls, with all but five over age 12.
