Washington Sept. 3 Senator Hitchcock attacked proposed amendments to the peace treaty declaring they would kill the treaty and plunge the United States into enormous losses and dangers. He said amendment demands fail to realize the gains of the peace settlement and urged unqualified ratification in the senate.
Harvest in Umatilla county reported nearly complete with about 75 percent of the wheat sold. Elevators filling rapidly trucks moving to the coast with government prices and permits easing shipments. Estimates place the crop near 4.5 million bushels and farmers' receipts around 7.0 million dollars. Money already banked by many growers as deliveries continue and seeding for next year looms.
General Disque testified before federal investigators of the spruce division denouncing the testimonies as the grossest misrepresentations in public records. He said he had consulted lawyers about potential action against men he alleged were poisoning congressmen with obstinate statements due to a personal grudge.
The Pioneer Woman's Society of Pendleton held its first fall meeting with Mrs H H B Rickers Mrs Lee Moorehouse Mrs L J Rogers and Mrs Norborne Herkeeley hosting. Great clusters of glow blossoms and yellow library room hangings framed the scene. Mr Jesse Falling and Mrs J Mr Raley provided tea hour entertainment after a brief business session. Out of town guests included Mrs Jomen Matlock of Eilwone and Mrs Ayres visiting Mrs Tae Matlock.
The contract of Miss Nellie Craw was received today naming her as teacher in District No. 5a Helix. Alton Yeager, principal of the echo at Adama, returned today from Nebraska where he spent the summer.
A. E. Yoder principal announced a standard two year high school course for the year. He returned from a summer course at Leland Stanford University. Miles Edith Perry primary Miss Frances Summers intermediate and Yoder high school staff are listed for the year. W. T. Gordon visited from Walla Walla and BE. F. Koepke of Athena appeared in Grand Jury proceedings.
Laredo Tex Sept Capt Mc Nabb was one kilometer across the border when shot yesterday by Mexican soldiers, General Garga of Nuevo Laredo Carranguista garrison announced. Garza, in a statement via the Mexican consul in Laredo, said the shooting was done by soldiers of the Carranzista outpost.
Lieutenant Lamar Toore a veteran of the Fiat Division spoke at the library auditorium last night asserting the French British and American forces won the war He emphasized three main factors British fleets control of sea allied command under Foch and American manpower at Chateau Thierry and the Argonne He warned the war ended a week too soon noting German morale might have persisted if it had continued and shared memories of service including a cowboy from Oregon John Lawrence whose wartime letters home reflected longing for home rather than battles
Pendleton lost gas service last evening due to worn bearings in the Pacific Power & Light Co. main pump. The town again faced outages before noon today with a full restoration not expected until tomorrow morning. Replacement bearings were rushed from Walla Walla by truck amid long-distance line delays.
Fort Dudley breaks into print with Earl Dudley visiting town. He owns thousands of acres in Umatilla County and plans to shave after barbering. Jim Hill arrives from the Pmatina metropolis for a brief Portland visit. D B H Boone, kin of Pendleton residents, aboard the Dreadnaught Arkansas, a Pacific Fleet ship visiting the Columbia River with a 24 000 ton displacement, 28 1/2 foot draft, 16 05 knot speed, 28444 horsepower, twelve 12 inch guns and twenty one 6 inch guns.
Pendleton Drug Company is undergoing renovations this week. Improvements include new wall and woodwork finishing, refinishing of the ceiling, and repainting of the store show windows.
Pendleton campers apply to W. W. Cryder forest supervisor for permits to build camp fires. Following a regulation extension, building or camping fires in the national forests without a permit is now a legal violation.
The Pendleton High School girls cadet corps met with Mr. Cramer and Mike Francis Morgan to organize the corps. A committee including Miles Morrison Monies Hosking Idlemoan Eldridge and Jenkins was named to decide on uniforms. The girls will also form a track team.
A Ford car owned by I. A Menton was stolen from in front of his house on Monday night by an unknown man. The thief deserted the machine after moving it four blocks. Menton had removed the check valve before leaving, which the thief could not fix. A neighbor saw the car being tinkered with about a half hour earlier.
Prominent Welker Idaho citizen FX Van Sickien, a former gubernatorial candidate, arrived in the city yesterday. He is known as a sheep farmer and banker. Dalrymple reports difficulty delivering messages due to staffing shortages at the Western Union office.
The executive committee of the Umatilla County Red Cross will meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the chapter headquarters in room 258 on the second floor of the federal building.
H. Rudd reports W. W. Allen leads the Seaside Orchestra, a well known all piece band. The group will perform for the Happy Canyon dances during Round-Up, promising Pendleton its best entertainment yet after five summers of memory.
Two delegations appeared before the county commissioners including representatives from Hermiston and Cabbage. Hermiston was led by Thomas Campbell George A Cressy HL Hitt and O T Hinkle while Cabbage sent L lucky Baldwin. They debated district matters and road right of way issues.
Peter I Van Oredall 69 died shortly after midnight after 20 years in the county. He was born in Wyandotte County Ohio and later moved to Kansas then Oregon. He farmed four miles west of town. He is survived by two brothers C Van Oradell and Orlando Van Oredall both of this city. Funeral will be held Sunday at 2 from Brown chapel with Rev Robert Lee Husenbarger officiating.
President Wilson plans a nationwide speaking tour to push quick ratification of the peace treaty. He will stress facts over rhetoric and target opposition senators, with West and Pacific coast appearances to address industrial unrest and price issues. He intends a personal report to the American people on why the United States should join the league of nations.
King Albert of Belgium is noted in this brief item, with references to his planned U S visit. John Kirk from Salem and Jim Hill on Portland business are noted. Names from Idaho Oregon California and Washington appear among travelers staying at the Golden Rule and moving through town.
