In San Francisco on October 29, Mrs Lena McComins shot herself in the temple after a quarrel with her husband W P McComas a wealthy mining engineer. He left for a hotel after attention to other people on a midnight taxicab ride. He heard a shot but did not answer. An investigation followed.
In San Francisco on October 29 Dr H Withrow killed himself in his Stratford hotel room by slashing his throat with a surgeon's lance. He stood before a mirror then fell to the bed and bled to death. Letters and effects suggest he was married and in ill health.
Berlin Oct 26 Two American entries lead the field in the Gordon Bennett Cup balloon race toward Russia after a shifting wind redirected the balloons over the North Sea. John Berry's Million Dollar Population and H E Honeywell's Uncle Sam represent the United States amid a field including Germany Belgium Italy France Austria Switzerland England and Denmark. Kansas City noted for an earlier explosion sparked by pilot replacement protests the start.
Dayton October 29 A curious incident at the county auditor's office reveals Mrs Nelle Kenoyer was listed as socialist party nominee for state senator in Astoria Garfield and Columbia counties. Her husband Warren Kenoyer and others learned of the strange ballot when shown a sample. The Jokers misfiled the filing fee at Olympia. The incident also cited failure to file campaign expense statements within ten days of the primaries.
