Reports from St Petersburg allege a broad strike movement in Russia with the party backing of a political organization. A mass meeting of students and workers displays strong activity while a looming general strike threatens railroads and industries. Martial law and liberty reforms are debated as unrest swells.
October 24 Chicago reports Hival rail road regulation meeting split into two groups led by Kiesel. The reform advocates pledged to back Roosevelt’s recommendations after signing a binding pledge, then moved from Steinway hall to the Auditorium Annex where a rump convention was not held. The regular group was greeted by the mayor and addressed by R. W. Higher and E. T. Campbell.
A fractured report from the region describes a state of siege with a rout, thousands seeking shelter in neighboring provinces and Montieow. About 2000 persons crowded streets as troops hold lines. Elliott F. Sheppard grandson of the late William H. Vanderbilt was found guilty of manslaughter for the August death of a 12 year old girl in France. He received three months imprisonment, a 600 franc fine, and 14,000 francs awarded to the child's parents to be paid jointly by Sheppard and the automobile company he worked for.
In Seattle Federal Court Judge Jesse Firve filed a complaint seeking patent issuance to 000 acres of Amberlands. Defendants include Henry Hewitt of Tacoma Weyerhaeuser Company Willamette Mortgage Company Portland and others. Location of lands unclear. case ties to alleged fraudulent land acquisition by John A Henson and Frederick A Hyde. Possible criminal charges against Hewitt and Weyerhauser creditors pending district attorney decision.
Oct 26 Portiaed New Orleans fire at a cheap lodging house destroyed the building. R L Mann a Denver railroad conductor and Harry Bradley a writer were identified among the dead. Mrs Muck's infant perished. Twenty six rooms burned last night and several victims were found burned or severely injured. Firefighters reported the hotel had no proper registry.
Word has arrived of the death of A. Duncan, formerly of Pendleton, at 4 Hospital in San Francisco. Cause given as Bright’s disease. Duncan worked at Clarke Hardware in Pendleton, then with Haseltine & Co of Portland before quitting due to illness. Body sent from San Francisco to Fairfield, California, for funeral under Sulsum Lodge No. 11, Knights of Pythias, in accord with the deceased’s directions.
Jury failed to reach a verdict in the Ward v Richard wont case over a brown and white bay mule named Maud. A.B. Kershaw of Walla Walla faced larceny charges for grain taken from a warehouse, and Godelb Miller v Peter Wheat was dismissed with costs assessed against the defendant. Juniper Canyon land purchase by FL McLellan prompts a move. crop prospects are good as ground conditions improve.
Pendleton high school eleven meets Whitman college team Saturday on Alta Street grounds at three. Coach Smythe and Manager Goodman arranged the game by phone with Whitman officials. Pendleton aims to test weight and speed against Whitman, after beating Whitman’s second team earlier, 6 to 0. Whitman beat Columbia 18 to 0 in Milton. Pendleton lineup includes Thompson, Means, Stanfield, Baker, Reeves, Scott, Strickland, Turner, Flerwa, Strand, Storie with Goodman Penland Dickson Gilbert as subs.
The National Woman Reformers meeting opened in Los Angeles with Mrs. Lanti Stevens of Portland presiding over the executive section. Anna A. Gordon, national vice president, led a preliminary convention session to assess alcohol content in the report. Margeret Dye Ellie, national superintendent, discussed the anti army canteen issue and potential retrenchment by Miss Mateler of Florence, New Jersey.
