Rescuers Die in Effort to Save Miners at Dawson NM
Two rescuers James Laird and Alan Rose died after inhaling poisonous gases while trying to reach survivors entombed in the Stag Cannon mine near Dawson New Mexico. Of 280 believed dead, 26 miners were rescued as fourty two corpses were recovered. The mine was wrecked by the explosion with burned bodies and timbers weakened, raising the risk of a rock fall.
