Baker County sheriff brought John Hand to the county jail after a preliminary exam waiver on a rape charge. He is accused of assaulting Alle Bates, a 15 year old girl in his employ, and is held on $2,000 bail awaiting next circuit court term. Also noted: over 12,000 communicants attend the General Missionary Convention in St Louis with delegates from many countries including a large Chinese and Japanese presence.
Lewiston hosts Commercial Club meeting with J L Blalock of Arlington to raise at least 5000 for the portage road. Subscriptions will be placed in banks across New Perce county and returned if the road is not completed within the stated time.
B Saylor the Butter Creek Mookman plans to import 400 head of steers for feeding, via agent in the interior. They will arrive around November 4, likely sourced from Canyon City district, with Blackwell paying about 26 cents per pound. Saylor will feed them for spring markets, using extensive alfalfa stocks to winter.
Hull England Oct 24 Russians Baltic squadron fired on a Hull flaking fleet about 200 miles north of here killing a crewman and wounding several others. A sack of wheat fell in a barn, crushing the skull and breaking the neck of 6-year-old Jacob Kontins near Pendleton. The child, son of Mrs. Britta An derada, was playing alone when the load toppled. he died shortly after. The coffin and funeral occurred at Union School later that afternoon.

Eastern Oregon stock inspection duties have swelled under federal oversight. Dr Lantz, long serving inspector, will share workload with A H Bibb of Battle Lake newly assigned to ease the burden while Dr Bibb and his wife relocate to Baker City to inspect cattle shipments. Dr Lantz travels to The Dalles on assignment as the situation grows.
The Eugene Guard reports Mrs Beals of Lawrence Street near 86, mother of El Elliott, a veteran Southern Pacific railroad engineer. For over 40 years Elliott has hauled the daily express through the Willamette Valley and, as his train passes his mother's cottage, he tosses a roll of papers to her waiting hands. Recently Mrs Elliott's health has declined, reducing their frequent encounters.

George Blount, a leading Negro politician in Berkeley, was dragged from the Berkeley station at 3 a.m. and shot after a confrontation that began when a lamp was thrown at a policeman who entered Blount’s restaurant to arrest another Negro. Troops were summoned as Berkeley faced a possible outbreak of violence.
James OConnell well known hotel keeper of Umatilla died yesterday of paralysis after a five day illness. His body was sent to Pendleton and will be taken to Walla Walla for funeral and burial under Catholic auspices. He was 64 years old and moved from Walla Walla to Umatilla eight years ago, operating the hotel since. He and his wife, both born in Ireland, leave seven children Mrs A A Stephens Mrs John Lennox Mrs A B Lingo Anna and Deed, and two sons Frank and James, all residents of Umatilla.
The coroner's jury will hold its third session at 1:90 this afternoon to investigate Seymour Swanger's death. Testimony places him on a train at 6:40 Friday evening, seen before Pendleton, while intoxicated. He climbed a box car with packages, one dropped and picked up by a man who could not return it.
