Kelso Washington Cable Suspension Bridge Opens
The Kelso trowlrider bridge over the Cowlitz River linking Kelso and Chatlin is now open for traffic. It is a cable suspension design with a 100-1001 knuckle or nicknife style draw, built in 50 foot sections. Each section attaches to piers with hinges and is counterbalanced by sand-filled boxes between the piers, about 40 feet above the water. A small power unit lowers the draw, with an old dore river motor providing power. The bridge can open in minutes and moves about 700 feet toward the river when needed. Estimated cost around 15,000 dollars.
