Passenger train No 1 entered town at 1 16 running late after a switch fault caused the engine and tender to leave rails. Coaches stayed on the main line. No injuries. engine and tender sustained damage but repairable. Wrecking crew from La Grande arrived hours later. track repaired and traffic resumed.
In Portland in October, San Francisco and Portland steamers were laid off as union engineers refused to desert their unions. The company allegedly offered three years’ positions to quit the unions, but the men would not desert. No interference with other boats reported.
A regional racioal (racial) school for agriculture cooking sewing carpentry blacksmithing and general domestic and farm studies opens today for boys and girls who completed a common course. Boys study agriculture dairying poultry farming farm accounts carpentry rural building while girls learn sewing cooking home economy food chemistry gardening and plant studies. The school is the first of its kind in America to be county-supported.
Mrs Boffel, known for liberating the Biddle brothers, currently in the state penitentiary, has decided to resist her husband’s divorce suit. She asked for counsel fees and plans to deny infidelity in court defending the case.
