Washington Oct 19 Secretary of Agriculture Wilson splits irrigation and drainage investigations into two sections. Sam Fortier irrigation chief at Berkeley becomes head of irrigation investigations while C G Elliott becomes chief of drainage investigations. Government and private works aim to settle 6 million acres west for 1908 ownership with focus on economical methods and a planned drainage of 2 million acres mainly east of the Mississippi.
Mildred Grant a T year old daughter of Howard Grant manager of the Seattle Electric Railway company died yesterday from burns caused when her dress caught fire from matches she was playing with.
On Oct 19 in St Louis delegates Frederick W Prienmeyer and Ferdinand Warner were arrested on the house floor after indictments by a special grand jury following a bill allowing Henry Asher to build a garage. Each is accused of taking 600 dollars for their vote. bail was denied and they were jailed amid uproar in the chamber. Both men run saloons.
Henry Thompson of Pendleton accidentally discharged a gun during a pheasant hunt near Cresswell, fatally wounding his brother Clarence Thompson. Clarence, a timber cruiser from Eugene, died after leg amputation and loss of blood. Henry, a longtime Pendleton resident, grieved as the family learned of the tragedy. Clarence leaves a wife, four brothers, a sister, and his parents Fayette and his wife in the McKenzie River headwaters region.
The Southern Farm Magazine argues vast gold remains undiscovered in the South but annual cotton harvests exceed world gold and silver production. It cites 1901–1906 values: world metals at 2.606 billion dollars versus South cotton plus feed at 3.669 billion, a 1.062 billion advantage for cotton.

Engineer G W Wine of Paseo and Express Messenger Pringle of Seattle were injured. Engineer Howe dazed. Both engines demolished. relief train brought injured to St Anthony’s hospital.
Mike Xnedes, a 24 year old Greek farmer from the Hecht district northwest of Baker City, died yesterday afternoon at the hospital from appendicitis after a prior operation years ago. His funeral was held that afternoon at the Baker and Folsom parlors with Rev. Charles Quinney of the Church of the Redeemer officiating.
H A Richardson of Adams, longtime manager of Inland Mercantile, announces the sale of his interest to Bert Kirby and J E B Owens, both of Adams, who now run the business. Richardson has not fixed future plans but may pursue another venture elsewhere.

The Wade residence in eastern Oregon, once owned by Walter M. Pierce, sold for 5500 to John Myrick. A 500 cash binder accompanied the bargain. Pierce plans to move to La Grande as his business interests transit to Union County and Hot Lake. The home, once linked to C. B. Wade and later Col. J. H. Raley, cost about 40000.
Ick West reports F Augustus Heinze will liquidate most stock holdings and again head west to seek fortune. A county school directors convention will be held in Pendleton on October 26 under a new law allowing annual director meetings and pay for attendees. Each district chairman serves as a delegate or may name a substitute. each delegate will receive $2, with clerks urged to attend at $5 each. The event follows the annual teachers’ institute.
In County Judge Gilliland's chambers yesterday afternoon the Royal and Girls Aid Society vs. affra Mary J. Nelson case was heard. The tears of the mother swayed the hearing more than the society’s attorney J Teuscher. Nelson's two children were described as poorly cared for, prompting the custody bid. Peter West appeared for Mrs. Nelson and the court appointed a divorce lawyer as guardian to the children. West pledged to fulfill that role.
C E Woods, a North Coast railroad right of way agent, visited Prosser last Friday and Saturday. Reliable sources say trains will run through the valley next summer, a depot site opposite Prosser has been chosen, and a new town site has been located near the line four and a half miles from Prosser across the river. The town is expected to boost Prosser as a feeder rather than cause local unease.

Fifteen passengers on an inbound Puyallup car narrowly escaped death when a Northern Pacific train backed into a street car in Tacoma on October 19. The impact knocked the conductor and a passenger about twenty feet onto the street. No serious injuries were reported.
