A 3000 plus transit? strike at Blagcard Oil in Bayonne New Jersey has escalated into open warfare in the streets. Stores and homes looted, several severely wounded as clashes erupt between police and strikers. Militia may be called to quell the disturbance. Police guard a barricade in one street.
Masterful address by Mrs. Kemp of the W C T U. praises Pendleton and calls for stronger laws and broader temperance efforts. She notes progress since 24 years ago, cites states going dry, women voting, and Indian delegates, and urges support for national prohibition through state action and continued education.
Former U S senator Charles W Fulton spoke at the Oregon theatre urging support for Charles B Hughes for president. He assailed Democratic policy as wasteful and untrustworthy, predicting economic and international trouble if the party remains in power.

Salem October 18 reports the annual Baptial estate convention all women’s state million society elected Reverend George H Young of Albany as president and Reverend FE B R Clevenger of Penilleton as vice president, signaling leadership for the gathering.
Oct 18 dispatches report a ninety mile per hour tornado between Mobile and Pensacola destroying a Mobile house and killing seven. A schooner capsized in Mobile Bay. Extensive damage and downed wires noted in Biloxi and New Orleans. Winds up to 110 miles per hour with inland progression and light rainfall in New Orleans.
Washington reports the last German Lusitania memorandum was not accepted by Secretary Polk. Officials say published reports of acceptance were partisan or political. The note reportedly argued torpedoing was justified and offered regret and reparations, but dep’t officials deny any acceptance and expect the Lusitania issue to remain unsettled after the election.
Athens reports the provisional government plans to recruit in America and send recruiters to Egypt Cyprus and Paria. Venizelos aims to have allies formally recognize the new regime in Salonika after mob disturbances in Athens. French marines occupy sites as tensions rise with the Allies.
Supporters of Charles Evans Hughes marched through Pendleton last evening led by the Round-Up band advertising a campaign meeting where ex-Senator C. W. Fulton spoke. The parade included 24 of 39 automobiles decorated with flags and tenants, followed by foot marchers, marking the camp’s first organized effort to rally workers for a candidate.
Report from a WCTU straw vote taken on the train from Meland Evening shows Woodrow Wilson favored by a small edge and the Brewers' amendment to prohibit liquor shipments carried by a comfortable majority. Results include Wilken 1 percent Hughes 2 percent Hanley 20 Brewers' amendment for and against 9 to make Oregon dry 1 for and 6 against.
