World renowned Strecker collection sold to Field Museum
The late Herman Strecker’s huge butterfly and moth collection, estimated between 76 000 and 100 000 specimens, has been sold by his widow to the Field Museum for 20000 pounds. The purchase includes Strecker’s library, manuscript related to the service, and engravings he made, with the 40 year effort making it the world’s second largest collection. Previously the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences offered 27000 dollars but the deal did not close.
