Sydney N S Oct 15 The trans Atlantic wireless system will be in operation in less than a week with messages passing between Cape Breton and Ireland. Commercial business will start at once and press messages will be handled at 5 cents per word, half the regular cable rate.
Portland on October 15 reports all export flour prices broken as millers raise value to 4.10 dollars per barrel. Dollar wheat also anticipated within days.
August Heinze plans to run for United States Senator from Montana with Jack MacGinnis as governor nominee. Seattle reports the Heinze faction is mounting a full campaign, with Ole Hanson directing Seattle activities as the campaign expands nationally.
Hope Idaho October 15 A railroad lineman Jordan Strum employed by the Northern Pacific drowned in about nine feet of water while fishing on Lake Pend d’Oreille. Strum, returning with Victor Miller and William Adderley in a small boat towed by a launch, stood up to rock the craft causing it to capsize. J J Donovan was in the launch as the group toppled into the water.
Chicago Oct 15 Styvesant Fish failed in the opening round of the control battle for the Illinois Central by seeking a postponement of the injunction hearing on restraining him from voting 5 million dollars of stock at the annual meeting. Harriman counsel pressed for immediate hearing and were sustained. The court ordered Fish and his lawyers to appear and the hearing was set to proceed at once.
Three important land sales were recorded in the east end of the county. M. Navin sold 150 acres for 2600 to Mary B Stevens. Gustavia Johnson transferred 140 acres for 1400 to Graham and Burkhart. W P Wallen sold 640 acres for 8000 to M O La Hue.

Baker City report of a fatal duel between Hank Rice a sheep herder for Arthur N Whittler and Christine Luck a herder for W G Ayre in Durkee country Rice was shot in the right hip and is not expected to survive He was brought to Baker City and hospitalized Luck was arrested after the shooting and remains jailed Rice had declared a death statement that could impact the upcoming case The shooting occurred about 14 miles northeast of Durkee at the head of Durkee creek both men carried guns for protection of flocks
Drawing of numbers for government land in the Lower Brule Indian reservation started today at Pierre. Lucky-number holders will file next week with capacity for 60 applicants daily until all land is taken or filings fail. Untaken tracts by December 20 go to the first homestead applicant. Prices range from 1.20 to 2.50 per acre, payable one-fifth at filing and the rest in five annual installments. About three quarters fall in the 2.50 class, the rest in lower sums.
In Nashville Oct 15 delegates from cotton states gathered to discuss uniform laws on child and female labor. Governor Patterson had issued the call, aiming for just, agreeable regulations. Statistics show 1,760,000 U S children aged 10 to 15 work, including about 600,000 girls, with Pennsylvania surpassing southern states in child labor.
C A Tupper of Pendleton Savings Bank reports Minnesota Iowa and other northern residents are seeking Oregon. He urges targeted advertising and literature to attract substantial settlers, noting bankers farmers merchants and Dunkard farmers may relocate for better climate and resources. Starbuck October 15 a fire leveled the drug store building owned by W E Sprout of Walla Walla. Insurance coverage on building and stock is $1500. The post office building also burned but all valuable mail was saved. Fire began at 2 am from an unknown origin.
Montague of Arlington and Miss Clara B Chenoweth of Weston united in marriage at Pendleton Tuesday noon with guests from Arlington Weston and Athena. Rev W T Easter of Pendleton First M E church officiated. The couple to reside in Arlington after a brief stay in Pendleton.
