Record hop sale drains Willamette valley market

In Portland on October 11 about 4000 bales of hops changed hands in the Willamette valley, the largest one-day volume in any market. Klaber Wolf & Netter and partners bought the bulk, paying 7 to 7.5 cents a pound for prime to choice hops, with McNeff Bros. taking 280 bales. most hops around Dallas and Independence were contracted earlier. The Klaber firm reportedly aims to corner Pacific coast supplies in collusion with Horst, targeting Teane Pineuwk and Tacoma short sellers as a reason for the marked purchases. The market rose as European values steadied and grain receipts at Portland showed higher activity. long-term meat demand shifts noted in ancillary reports.

Reindeer Growth Surges at Uncle Sam Farm in Alaska

The Alaska reindeer herd at Uncle Sam’s farm near Unalaska has grown to nearly 20,000, up from earlier counts, with a threefold rise in the past five years and a record increase this year. Since Rev Sheldon Jicksory introduced reindeer fifteen years ago, the herd has expanded on mossy Seward Peninsula pastures. The government’s $25,000 appropriation funds new schools to train Mikimas in reindeer husbandry, while deer teams aid winter mail and freight routes. Conservative estimates peg Alaska’s feeding capacity at about 10,000,000 head, with natives relying on reindeer for food alongside caribou and seals.

Smokeless fuel from peat and bitumen process patent

Mechanical Engineer Longon discusses a patent for making smokeless fuel by carbonizing peat with bitumen. A mixture of one third wet peat and two thirds bitumen is heated in a retort to drive off hydrocarbons, producing a coherent mass that ignites cleanly with minimal smoke. The retort may operate at up to 10 psi, with heat applied for about five hours and options for external or generated heat, and the resulting liquids recovered for phenol and other products.
