La France Trial Opens in Circuit Court

James La France, who pleaded guilty to defrauding fraternal insurance plans of nearly 16000, faced the court as his trial opened. He had earlier shown four fishermen a body on the Clackamas river near Estacada, claiming it was his own. Deputy DA McGuire said evidence suggests the deceased died by violence, with a broken rib noted in the coroner’s report.

The Frayed Mystery of La France and the Body

The rib was broken by a bullet and La France refuses to reveal where he obtained a hoody despite his confession. Mrs La France denies knowledge of the body’s origin and La France says she was not told. The body remains unidentified. La France vanished from home in June 1912 after discussing life insurance. On June 20 four fishermen were led to the body on the river bank and Len Arman identified La France as the guide. He appeared agitated and disappeared after showing where the body lay. A wisecrack about a girl and a kiss ends this fragment.
