Efforts To Organize Domestics Union Fail In Spokane
In Spokane Washington efforts to form a domestics union under Mrs May Arkwright Hutton failed as women refused to wear badges. Hutton proposed an eight hour day and businesslike home management but workers rejected union ties and tags, emphasizing they do not want to be labeled as servants. Mrs M A Owens of the Pioneer Guild called the plan unworkable, noting graduates of high schools often seek other lines with scarce domestic openings.
