Second day opens with five accidents as sky pilot Lieutenant Maynard leads to Chicago in nine hours and 25 minutes. Flights depart New York and San Francisco with 47 planes starting the 6400 mile transcontinental course amid crashes and missing craft.
Washington October 9 President Wilson passed a more comfortable night and is reportedly improved Secretary Tumulty and Capt Grayson and Rue Tokay announced There is no immediate change in his condition though the improvement continues gradually and cautiously through the day
Fire Prevention Day and Columbus Day were celebrated jointly at Pendleton High School in a morning assembly led by Mit Rather Jen Kina. Parents attended as students showcased songs, school life tales, discourses on fire prevention, piano music, and a patriotic finale.
One thousand pounds of clothing were shipped yesterday from Pendleton as part of a statewide effort for Armenian relief. The drive was led by the Ministerial Association of Pyn Gleton with Hov. John Heathman longtime Pendleton resident died at his home aged 67 from a diabetes complication. He served as city street commissioner for eight years and chief of police for four, also two terms as county constable. Born in Kentucky and known as Missouri John he lived most of his life in Pendleton. Surviving are his wife, two daughters in Portland and Marshfield, two sons in Pendleton, and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements tentative for Sunday with Rev RR BK presiding.
Hamley and Co started excavation for a one story addition of 30 by 25 feet behind the vacated American Express Co space. The 750 extra square feet will house offices, display, shipping, and a larger workshop as part of a nearly doubling of space with work expected to run to about 2000 and more workers if available.
