New Orleans October 7. A mutiny ended in a battle on the coast steamer St John. Six men were wounded. Captain Spiro Casovich said four Greeks tried to land Chinese aboard. The mutineers attacked the captain’s brother during the struggle, but the captain and others overpowered the Greeks. The Greeks later escaped in a small boat as federal agents searched for them.

The resolution cites Chicago’s labor bank failure and urges California unions to manage their funds with a committee tasked to draft plans for the next federation convention.

Occupants uninjured. front axle bent and one spring broken. Osterman and party had been spending lavishly during their Western tour and face no serious injuries.
Augusta Post of New York ascends in an air balloon reaching 24 200 feet in height with the temperature at forty degrees below zero. He remains aloft 48 hours and 26 minutes, breaking the American records for height and time in the air. Post previously survived a perilous fall in Germany last year when a gas bag ruptured at several thousand feet.
In Terre Haute Indiana last night Ralph Conover Sr. was killed in a doorway. His son Ralph Conover Jr. and George Greenway were arrested and charged. Young Conover confessed plotting the killing over perceived mistreatment of family members.
Seattle freight interests tell the Interstate Commerce Commission that railroad rates block Pacific coast manufacturers and jobbers from competing east of the Cascades. The hearing in Seattle aims to readjust through rates to let Seattle Tacoma and Portland goods reach St Paul Omaha Chicago and Kansas City on equal terms. The Humboldt Steamship case asks the White Pass and Yukon railroad to set a through Seattle to inland rate alleging discrimination in favor of Alaska operators and Pacific Coast firms.

The Ryan murder trial will begin tomorrow with jurors drawn in the morning. It is expected two days will be needed to select twelve jurors, delaying the trial proper until Monday. The case was set for Sept. 27 but postponed due to the complainant Ja mie Schubert of Walla Walla. A damage suit involving the railroad company also faced postponement, with resolution anticipated today.
Washington official says Gompers Europe trip will spur a new international federation of labor. Morrison notes autonomy of each country's union is protected while seeking rights and solidarity for wage workers worldwide. Federation may not finish this year but is expected soon.

Lisbon October 7 The Portuguese steamer Bastos Reis was wrecked off Averro with seventeen bodies washed ashore and fear that most of the 63 crew were drowned.

The author contends current taxation would rise without revenue from electricity and water, notes the Northwestern Gas & Electric franchise, and suggests city ownership could yield profits to cut property taxes while meeting water and power needs.
