Dispatch from San Sebastian reports King Manuel and Queen Mother Amelle of Portugal traveling through the city this morning en route to France. The fate of the deposed king's uncle, the Duke of Oporto, remains unknown.

Washington Oct. 6 Thousands of acres of forest lands restored to the public domain by President Taft will be made subject to settlement this month. The lands cover Colorado Washington Oregon Utah Idaho Wyoming and New Mexico as specified by the order setting apart forest reserves for entry.
Bartender Jack O Neal withdrew his not guilty plea and admitted selling intoxicating liquor. He was fined 50 dollars and ordered to serve the fine at 2 dollars per day in jail. George McDonald and Neil Dozier also faced pleas with Dozier pleading guilty and McDonald changing to guilty, with further sentencing planned. Nearby beer cases and other incidents, including a vacuum cleaner theft, were slated for future hearings.
In New York on October 6 the Independence League refused to endorse the Republican ticket. John J. Hopper was named for governor and William R. Hearst for lieutenant governor. The platform urged direct nominations for all offices, the initiative referendum and recall, and a plebiscite on woman suffrage. The convention planned Friday talks on whether to nominate a straight ticket or endorse the GOP slate.
New York Oct 6 Colonel Goethals chief engineer says the Panama canal will be cut through by 1915. He notes rapid progress in lock concrete work and excavation, with a new line from Gatum to Gamboa to be finished by 1912. Lake Gatum will rise to fifty feet, and Atlantic and Pacific sides advancing. final digging to be completed well before 1915 though details may extend.
Detectives were assigned to search Southern California ports for the gasoline launch Kate which cleared San Francisco on September 25. It is believed dynamite taken from the Pastime was loaded onto the Kate and moved to Los Angeles. Detective Burns, overseeing the case with Police Chief Galloway, said the dynamiter would be caught as recovery of bodies continued.
Philadelphia October 6 The University of Pennsylvania becomes the first major school to place wireless telegraphy in its curriculum. The physics department will oversee the instruction and two wireless stations will be operated by students.
Roosevelt leaves New York for a sweeping tour through the south and central west with manuscripts for many addresses. He will speak at the Appalachian Exposition Knoxville on conservation, attend Uncle Remus Day in Atlanta, then Hot Springs and Peoria for a Knights of Columbus talk. He plans to address Pope Vatican tensions, and will campaign in Indiana for Senator Beveridge.
Chicago Oct. 6 state senator Broderick testified before the senatorial committee that he did not give Holtslaw $2500 to vote for Lorimer. He said he never bribed any man, countering Holtslaw who claimed the payment was for Lorimer's vote. He refused to answer several questions citing constitutional right against self incrimination.
Stanton Wh Oct 68 A motorist named John Lierman admits he forgot the cause of a wreck that killed 36 and injured many more on Tuesday. Lierman has been arrested and likely faces responsibility for deaths. The hearing began today and is expected to run about two weeks with all bodies identified.
San Jose Cal Oct 6 Selmso Eraphs at Santa Clara college recorded several slight earth tremors yesterday The disturbance sourced by the observatory appeared from a southeastern direction and was felt at several distant locations around the campus and surrounding area.
Six hundred fifteen cabin passengers detained at quarantine since Monday on the steamers Santa Anna and Moltke from Italian ports for possible cholera were released today. The vessels remain held and steerage passengers totaling about two thousand sixty are likely to be moved tomorrow to Hoffmanland for observation. The steamer that completed the trio of cholera suspects last night received a clean bill and was allowed to proceed from quarantine with all aboard.
Seattle October 6 7 M Hannaford of St Paul second year president of the Northern Pacific railways arrived in Seattle on an inspection of traffic conditions and said crop conditions are much better than reports. He predicts 60 percent yield along the line and wheat shipments to coast terminals about 70 percent of normal. He estimates 3000 cars of apples will be sent east from the North Yakima area.
Disagreement over division of clubs ends move to enlarge the Pacific Coast league to eight teams. Northwestern league may place a Portland team next season if Congressman W W McCredie funds it, ensuring Portland will have baseball when the Coast league team is away.

The theater is planned to be ready for occupation on September 1 1911 according to Marc Klaw who has spent several days in Portland finalizing the site and construction arrangements.

Portland business men rebut claims of a plan to move the Pendleton Round-up to Portland and state there is no such effort. C. Chapman of the Portland Commercial Club says the event belongs to Pendleton and would not be moved, praising Pendleton’s success and urging continued support in Pendleton.
